This thesis presents the proposed design for a modular concept for three oven products for Collins Aerospace, that answers the design assignment:
“Develop a concept for three modular aerospace galley oven products sharing a common chassis and have a minimum amount of unique parts to create a new business opportunity in the form of new products for Collins Aerospace.”

Collins Aerospace is a leading provider of aerospace solutions. Its galley inserts division specialises in designing in-flight galley equipment for commercial aircraft. These products are developed to meet strict aerospace industry standards and customer needs. Part of the galley inserts portfolio are convection and steam ovens, which heat up meals up to 170 °C, and bun warmers, which use static air to warm bread up to 80 °C. Currently, Collins Aerospace offers these products in standardised galley sizes, including Size 2 ovens and Size 4 bun warmers. There is a limited demand for the proposed new products for this project are a Size 4 oven, Size 4 bun warmer, and Size 5 bun warmer, making individual development not feasible, the modular approach could help to address this gap in the portfolio. A Size 2 measures 563 × 287 × 570 mm, a Size 4 is half the height of a Size 2, and a Size 5 is half the depth of a Size 4.

To address the assignment, the Double Diamond design process is followed, consisting of the phases: Analyse, Define, Design, and Deliver. Throughout all phases, an integrated approach is applied by focusing on three key perspectives: the user, business, and technology.

In the Analyse phase the user, business, and technology context and needs are researched. The key insights from this phase lead to the main design drivers and list of requirements and wishes set in the Define phase. The main design drivers that are the basis of the following phases are:
Main Design Drivers:
- The products must be usable for flight attendants when placed above worktop height.
- All three products share a common door design and fit product specific elements within a shared frame. Next to the door, shared components should be commonly designed wherever possible.
- The three products fit in the existing design language of the Essence and Modus collection of Collins Aerospace.
- The oven should have a capacity of at least 12 meals, with and extended goal of 16 meals.
In the Design phase, multiple design directions were explored. With criteria derived from the main design drivers and requirements the most suitable design direction was chosen. In the Deliver phase the layout of the elements, user interface, and integration in the Collins Aerospace design language was developed and validated.

This final design answers the assignment by proposing a modular design for three galley oven products, with a shared chassis, door, inner oven, user interface, and electronics between two or three of the products. Only a minimal amount of product specific element are required to define the individual product, primarily the heating elements. The design is user-centered, with an angled interface positioned on the side of the product to ensure ergonomic use for flight attendants. By combining these technical and user-focused aspects, the concept provides a business opportunity to expand the galley inserts portfolio for Collins Aerospace.

Recommendations include conducting further testing with a broader, international user group and validating the heating performance of the proposed products.

This report presents the work done for my graduation project at the TU Delft in collaboration with Gyromotics. The assignment for the project was to create a modular and customizable design for the housing of Gyromotics’s foot and ankle prosthesis, that allows users to customize the look of their prosthesis, providing them with a way to express themselves as individuals.

In recent years, prosthetic technology has advanced significantly, offering users greater functionality and comfort (LeMoyne, 2016). However, the aesthetic and personal customization of prosthetic devices remain relatively underdeveloped.

After extensive background and user research, the main challenge for this project was defined: “integrate the functional, contextual and aesthetic design concerns into a coherent, final product, taking the aesthetics & appearance as the guiding principle” .

A final design proposal was presented as a conclusion after
extensive research on the topic,
several stakeholder interviews,
several user tests,
exploration and ideation phases.

The final design proposal called the Nova Boomerang presents a concept consisting of two elements:
Three models for the main cover of the prosthesis. These three models have been found through explorative sketching and brainstorming, as well as rounds of user feedback.
A photo-frame element that adds on to the main body of the cover. This enables the user to pick and add any material, color or pattern to the cover of the prosthesis.

The three models that are presented:
1. Elegant
2. Sporty
3. Aggressive

By offering multiple models, Gyromotics enables clients to choose the model that best fits their individual taste. Next to offering the three models, the photo-frame element is added to give the user even more freedom of choice in the everyday look of the prosthesis.

The unique selling points of the Nova Boomerang are:
- A modular cover design that actively involves the user in shaping a prosthesis that reflects their personality and style (concept of the three models).
- Day-to-day customization, allowing the prosthesis to change its look without the need to purchase an entirely new model (concept of the photo-frame).
- A design that evolves with the user, both physically (in size) and personally, empowering rather than limiting individual expression (proposal in general).

Several tests were carried out to validate the final proposal and gather user feedback to further develop the design. Based on the results of these tests, it was found that the main recommendation for Gyromotics was to invest into further testing of the material and use of the Nova Boomerang over a longer period of usage.

This thesis presents a modular accessory system designed to promote bicycle helmet usage in the Netherlands. The project aims to address the barriers to helmet usage by integrating functional, customizable, and attractive helmet accessories that align with the needs and preferences of young urban cyclists.
Through extensive research involving context research, helmet product analysis, and user research, the study identifies key factors influencing helmet use, including social norms, potential functions, and problems of helmet products. Social norm is the most influencial factor among them, which indicates that the low helmet acceptance is not merely due to dissatisfaction with functionality but is influenced by multiple social norms. This explains why conventional helmet designs often fail to attract users. A further case studies is conducted to identify effective design strategies targeting young urban populations.
The modular system incorporates clip-on connection system with four accessory modules. The connection system uses a unique magnetic clip structure that is easy to operate and ensures a secure fit. The four accessories, including a rain hood, visor, head lights, and earphones, tailored to target user needs and preferences to enhance convenience, safety, and personalization. By addressing functional shortcomings and leveraging the appeal of customization, the modular accessory system aims to shift social perceptions of helmet use, making it a more integral part of the cycling culture in the Netherlands.
Additionally, the scalability of the project contributes to the further service system development and commercialization plan to support future market development.

This graduation project aimed to design a wireless charging solution for charging E-bikes in two-tier bicycle racks. The starting point of this project was the ‘Charging Kickstand’ from the Delft-based start-up ‘TILER’. This Charging Kickstand, when mounted and connected to any E-bike, is typically placed on top of a TILER ‘Charging Tile’ when the E-bike is parked. Within the context of this graduation project, two-tier bicycle racks, as commonly found at public locations such as train stations, forcing users to put their kickstands down to the ground to charge their E-bikes in addition to already placing their bikes within these racks is cumbersome and not a viable solution. Therefore, the main aim of this project was to develop a solution that utilized the same Charging Kickstand for wireless charging, without requiring users to perform any additional steps compared to regularly parking their bikes in two-tier bicycle racks.

The biggest challenge within this project was to design a charging solution that would not obstruct the bike when entering the bicycle rack. The Charging Kickstand is mounted in the exact location that any other kickstand would be on an E-bike: at the center between the pedals or at the rear of the bike on the chainstay. For a wireless charger to end up next to the kickstand when the bike is placed in the bicycle rack, it was determined that it would always cross paths with the pedals and cranks of the bike, possibly causing a collision or preventing a bike from entering the bicycle rack, which would result in the bicycle rack failing at its primary goal of storing bikes.

Through an exploratory initial prototyping and ideation process, two methods for preventing pedal collision were identified and tested:
1. Ensuring a pedal position upon entering the bicycle rack so that the pedals would move over the charger.
2. Having the charger ‘rest’ in such a position that it would not collide with the pedals and then automatically moving the charger itself towards the Charging Kickstand when the bike is placed all the way in the bicycle rack.

Both approaches proved to be unsuitable due to tight spatial margins within two-tier bicycle racks. It was then concluded that this project would result in a charging solution in which pedal collision is inevitable.

The resulting final design is a charger that can be pushed all the way flat to the ground by the pedals upon collision, allowing the pedals to pass over it. After being passed by the pedals, the flexible hinging mechanism on which this charger is placed causes the charger to spring back up to its upright charging position, giving this design the fitting name ‘TILER UP-Charge’.
