Abstract
Accurate subsurface characterization is essential for the sustainable development of geothermal energy, particularly for assessing reservoir performance. In this study, we present the design and acquisition of an S-wave active-source seismic survey at the Kwintsheul geothermal site in the Netherlands, motivated by large uncertainties in microseismic-event locations and unresolved fault structures. Using a full-wavefield modelling and inversion framework, we evaluate multiple acquisition scenarios constrained by existing seismic data and field accessibility, and select an optimized survey geometry that balances imaging resolution and operational feasibility. We record an S-wave survey along a line of 3-component receivers using an electrical vibrator oriented in the crossline direction, which allows approximating an SH-wave data when using the crossline receiver component. The resulting dataset provides the basis for developing a site-specific S-wave velocity model and improving structural imaging of the geothermal reservoir.
