Abstract
The project is the re-design of Centraal Beheer, guided by the use of materials from the surroundings of Apeldoorn to generate a building which aims to catalyse a shift towards more locally produced materials. In response to the climate crisis and depleting natural resources, the project aims to find value in pre-existing resources within Apeldoorn, specifically from the agricultural land, the paper making industry, the Veluwe forests and the iconic structuralist building designed by Herman Hertzberger, Centraal Beheer. The proposal transforms the building into a place to grow, manufacture, trade, research, and live with the local materials. The design focusses mainly on the residential program on the upper levels, demonstrating how the local material supply and ground floor workshop can generate housing which responds to individual needs and engages the residents in the design and build process.
