Optical trapping of (sub)micron-sized particles is broadly employed in nanoscience and engineering. The materials commonly employed for these particles, however, have physical properties that limit the transfer of linear or angular momentum (or both). This reduces the magnitude of forces and torques, and the spatiotemporal resolution,...

In this paper, the design and the characterization of a novel interrogator based on integrated Fourier transform (FT) spectroscopy is presented. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first integrated FT spectrometer used for the interrogation of photonic sensors. It consists of a planar spatial heterodyne spectrometer, which is...

Background<br/>Hyperspectral imaging is a technique that enables the mapping of spectral signatures across a surface. It is most commonly used for surface chemical mapping in fields as diverse as satellite remote sensing, biomedical imaging and heritage science. Existing models, such as the Kubelka-Munk theory and the Lambert-Beer law also...

The Optics Group of Delft University of Technology plays a major role in teaching optics to bachelor and master students. In addition, the group has a long record of introducing, demonstrating and teaching optics to quite diverse groups of people from outside of the university. We will describe some of these activities and focus on a recently...

This paper introduces the recent European Aerosol Research Lidar Network (EARLINET) quality-assurance efforts at instrument level. Within two dedicated campaigns and five single-site intercomparison activities, 21 EARLINET systems from 18 EARLINET stations were intercompared between 2009 and 2013. A comprehensive strategy for campaign setup and...

Identifying subwavelength objects and displacements is of crucial importance in optical nanometrology. We show in this Letter that nanoantennas with subwavelength structures can be excited precisely by incident beams with singularity. This accurate feeding beyond the diffraction limit can lead to dynamic control of the unidirectional scattering...

Au and Ag nanoshells are of interest for a wide range of applications. The plasmon resonance of such nanoshells is the property of interest and can be tuned in a broad spectral regime, ranging from the ultraviolet to the mid-infrared. To date, a large number of manuscripts have been published on the optics of such nanoshells. Few of these,...

We demonstrate emission of terahertz pulses from a BiVO4/Au thin film interface, illuminated with femtosecond laser pulses. Based on the experimental observations, we propose that the most likely cause of the THz emission is the Photo-Dember effect caused by the standing wave intensity distribution formed at the BiVO4/Au interfaces.

The refractive index of a conventional dielectric layer can be enhanced using an Artificial Dielectric Layer (ADL). Here we present the fabrication of low temperature PECVD Silicon Carbide (SiC) membranes with very high refractive index (up to 5 at 1 THz) in the terahertz frequency range. The SiC deposition parameters have been tuned to reach a...

We show that the interface between gold and thermally formed cuprous oxide, which emits terahertz radiation when illuminated with ultrafast femtosecond lasers, is in fact an AuCu/Cu2O interface due to the formation of the thermal diffusion alloy AuCu. The alloy enables the formation of a Schottky-barrier-like electric field near the interface...

It is known that, at optical frequencies, a simple interface between a perfect dielectric and a real metal can sustain the propagation of surface plasmon polaritons only for P-polarized electromagnetic waves, being S-polarized surface plasmons are prohibited. In this work, we formally show that, strictly speaking, both polarization states are in...

We report on the surprisingly strong, broadband emission of coherent terahertz pulses from ultrathin layers of semiconductors such as amorphous silicon, germanium and polycrystalline cuprous oxide deposited on gold, upon illumination with femtosecond laser pulses. We have measured terahertz near-field spectra of cesium iodide crystals as small as ?10 ?m in diameter, which were deposited on single, sub-wavelength-sized apertures created in thin gold films on a substrate. The advantage of using small apertures for terahertz microspectroscopy is that only terahertz light that has interacted with the cesium...

We report on direct measurements of the magnetic near-field of metamaterial split ring resonators at terahertz frequencies using a magnetic field sensitive material. Circularly polarized electric fields incident on subwavelength apertures produce near-field phase singularities with phase vorticity ±1 depending on the polarization handedness. These near-field phase singularities combine with those associated with orbital angular momentum and result in polarization-dependent transmission. We produce arbitrary...
