This book provides a detailed description of how Python can be used to give insight into the flow of groundwater based on analytic solutions. Starting with simple problems to illustrate the basic principles, complexity is added step by step to show how one-dimensional and two-dimensional models of one or two aquifers can be implemented. Steady and transient flow problems are discussed in confined, semi-confined, and unconfined aquifers that may include wells, rivers, and areal recharge. Special consideration is given to coastal aquifers, including the effect of tides and the simulation of interface flow. Application of Python allows for compact and readable code, and quick visualization of the solutions. Python scripts are provided to reproduce all results. The scripts are also available online so that they can be altered to meet site-specific conditions. This book is intended both as training material for the next generation of university students and as a useful resource for practitioners. A primer is included for those who are new to Python or as a refresher for existing users.

The Salt Water Intrusion Meetings, or SWIMs, are a series of meetings that focus on seawater intrusion in coastal aquifers and other salinisation processes. 2018 marks the 50th year of the SWIM and the 25th biennial meeting. The SWIM proceedings record half a century of research progress on site characterisation, geophysical and geochemical techniques, variable-density flow, modelling, and water management. The SWIM is positioning itself to remain a viable platform for discussing the coastal aquifer management challenges of the next 50 years.

Submarine groundwater discharge is an important part of the hydrological cycle, but remains under-investigated for confined aquifers with no surface outcrop at the beach. This paper considers the offshore directed flow of fresh groundwater in the unconfined and confined aquifers along the coast of the Western Netherlands. Salinity patterns based on hydrological, geological, and geophysical field data are presented in five shore-normal hydrogeological cross-sections, extending from the beach to 4. km inland. The offshore continuation of the fresh groundwater is discussed using analytical models and cone penetration tests (CPTs) performed at the beach. All CPTs taken around the low water line of the intertidal zone reveal that changes from saline to fresh groundwater are always associated with a low-permeable layer. Such a low-permeable layer, which can be as thin as a few decimetres, may form the confining layer between the unconfined and confined aquifers, or can occur within of the unconfined aquifer. Due to its high vertical resolution, a CPT is an effective method to detect these variations in salinity and lithology. At each of the investigated locations, freshwater was present in the confined aquifer. Assuming that this fresh groundwater is part of an active flow system, the submarine freshwater tongue is estimated to extend at least a few hundred meters offshore, based on analytical model calculations. Hydrochemical data from an old offshore borehole, however, suggest this may be an underestimate and that the submarine freshwater tongue originates from former times when the coastline was located further westward than nowadays.@en

Groundwater systems are increasingly used for seasonal aquifer thermal energy storage (SATES) for periodic heating and cooling of buildings. Its use is hampered in contaminated aquifers because of the potential environmental risks associated with the spreading of contaminated groundwater, but positive side effects, such as enhanced contaminant remediation, might also occur. A first reactive transport study is presented to assess the effect of SATES on the fate of chlorinated solvents by means of scenario modeling, with emphasis on the effects of transient SATES pumping and applicable kinetic degradation regime. Temperature effects on physical, chemical, and biological reactions were excluded as calculations and initial simulations showed that the small temperature range commonly involved (ΔT < 15 °C) only caused minor effects. The results show that a significant decrease of the contaminant mass and (eventually) plume volume occurs when degradation is described as sediment-limited with a constant rate in space and time, provided that dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) is absent. However, in the presence of DNAPL dissolution, particularly when the dissolved contaminant reaches SATES wells, a considerably larger contaminant plume is created, depending on the balance between DNAPL dissolution and mass removal by degradation. Under conditions where degradation is contaminant-limited and degradation rates depend on contaminant concentrations in the aquifer, a SATES system does not result in enhanced remediation of a contaminant plume. Although field data are lacking and existing regulatory constraints do not yet permit the application of SATES in contaminated aquifers, reactive transport modeling provides a means of assessing the risks of SATES application in contaminated aquifers. The results from this study are considered to be a first step in identifying the subsurface conditions under which SATES can be applied in a safe or even beneficial manner.@en
