More and more smart doorbells (SDBs) are making their way to the front doors in the Netherlands. Equipped with camera and microphone, owners experience the benefit of convenience and feeling safe. However, due to its big field of view, those living around the smart doorbell can be captured too. This might lead to many issues, including social tensions in the neighbourhood. Little research has been conducted about lived experiences around smart doorbells.

This project aimed to explore social dynamics around smart doorbells in the neighbourhood. Inspired by a research-through-design approach, an interview study and scenario-based roleplaying provided insights about current critical awareness, tensions experienced, how these are dealt with and barriers and drivers to dialogue. There is little knowledge and critical awareness about SDBs, both from owners and neighbours. When they are aware of the doorbells, neighbours experience discomfort due to now knowing about, having no access to and no control over smart doorbell footage. There are many factors that lead them to avoid the SDB and related issues. However, people don’t just ‘talk to their neighbours’, as they experience many barriers to dialogue. A set of speculative doorbells was designed with the aim to encourage dialogue.

Four concepts were iteratively prototyped and tested, from which two were combined into the final speculation: ‘the___doorbell’. The adjective ‘smart’ has been removed, inviting people to question what ‘smartness’ means in relation to the doorbell. This speculative doorbell consists of one body and three different lenses, each their own character and expressiveness.
Imagined in an alternative present, the___doorbell and it’s owners are shown in a concept video. Through watching this video, the social, honest and curious doorbell aim to encourage a rich critical reflection, covering multiple of the identified social tensions in the neighbourhood. The video is presented with an ‘instruction manual’, carefully guiding the reflection and dialogue when used in a group setting.

The concept was evaluated in groups and by individuals. With its light-hearted presentation, the__doorbell invited to talk about smart doorbells related to social dynamics in a nuanced yet critical way.

This project presented dialogue as a short-term intervention on a neighbourhood level, but might also stimulate dialogue with the other actors involved, including policy-makers.

This report provides a concept for the Dutch national police, in the form of a card game to reflect on humor within police base teams.

The graduation project was a collaboration with the Dutch national police, specifically the ‘Politie Voor Iedereen’ team, which focuses on improving diversity and inclusivity within the police force.
There is a recognized need for a diverse and inclusive police force, which requires effort as it is not naturally achieved. This project started with the specific focus on gender equity within the police culture; The current work culture within the police force does not fully support women. The primary objective of this project is to transform the work culture to promote diversity and inclusivity.

Two design lenses were utilized for this project. Cultural sensitive design was applied to research and to instigate change in the organization’s culture. The feminist lens was used to examine the existing power dynamics within the organization and to ensure fair outcomes.

Literature research was conducted to understand the experiences of policewomen, which was then compared to research conducted within two police base teams.
The presence of working women in the Netherlands, including within the police force, is a relatively recent development since the mid-20th century. Addressing disparities and achieving equal treatment for women within the police force required time and effort.
Police culture is undeniably masculine. The research highlights various themes indicating that individuals who do not conform to the prevailing masculine norm face exclusion and must adapt.

Eight interviews were conducted with police employees, and the insights, along with observation notes, were used for thematic data analysis.
The research findings revealed subtle difficulties related to gender equity, which were evident in the thematic analysis. Four themes were identified that could improve inclusivity and diversity, thereby providing better support for women within the organization.

The theme of humor was chosen as the focus. Although humor is an integral part of police work culture, it had not been extensively explored. Humor serves to discharge and process heavy incidents, as well as foster bonding between colleagues. However, humor can cross boundaries, as it is often dark and rough. Speaking up about humor that is experienced as offensive is not common. While workplace humor extends beyond gender inclusion, this theme presented opportunities for meaningful contributions.

The relationship between humor, gender, and the police was investigated through literature. Additionally, police humor was explored through a ‘probe cards’ test conducted at base teams. This activity revealed that there is little common ground when it comes to jokes and funny situations. What is considered offensive or funny is not determined by a norm within either of these base teams; humor is subjective and reactions vary greatly.

This led to the development of the ‘Politie humor kwartet’, a game for groups of police officers to reflect on humor within the police work environment. The concept has the potential to bring about structural change in the work culture surrounding humor, particularly in terms of behavior and speaking up about jokes that are experienced as offensive.

This graduation project emerged from an existing collaboration between the Delft University of Technology and the Responsible Sensing Lab; a project of the Amsterdam Institute of Advanced Metropolitan Solutions. The Initial Assignment had the goal of enhancing the feeling of safety in public environments through the use of responsible sensing. Following the method of Value Sensitive Design and its 3 core aspects, contextual research was conducted into 1) perceived safety as the value, 2) smart sensors as the technology, and 3) public spaces as the context of use. Subsequently, the project was narrowed down to focus on improving the design aesthetics and visual impact of camera sensors in public spaces, with the intended end result of enhancing the perception of safety with the Target User Group of heterosexual women, aged 15-25. Through the involvement of this Target User Group in 2 co-creation sessions, multiple informal feedback sessions and a Product Usability Evaluation in the Concept Development and Product Design phases of this project, a final design was created.

The final design, BL0.0M, is a reconception of the design, use and perception of current camera sensors. Compatible with both dome- and bullet camera sensor types, BL0.0M takes inspiration from a flower to serve both a functional and visual purpose to its public environment. Upon activation of the camera sensors, BL0.0M’s petals open up–clearly communicating its functionality to passers by, and can be adjusted to convey different product expressions. Its modularity extends to its petal modules, which can easily be interchanged to allow for further customisation and variety.

The reception of the Target User Group was both critical and auspicious. Future recommendations primarily include further design iterations in petal design and positioning, as well as looking into the internal– and external validity of the user group involved. From both informal feedback and the Product Usability Evaluation, BL0.0M elicited a high level of intrigue and enthusiasm. Its functional and aesthetic contrast with current camera sensor designs is one of the main drivers for this response. BL0.0M is a visionary design with an eye to the future, serving as the version 0.0 and a blank canvas for the next big steps and innovations in smart sensor design and implementation. For now, this is only the first step.
