Context. Most well-resolved disks observed with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) show signs of dust traps. These dust traps set the chemical composition of the planet-forming material in these disks, as the dust grains with their icy mantles are trapped at specific radii and could deplete the gas and dust at smaller radii of volatiles. Aims. In this work, we analyse the first detection of nitric oxide (NO) in a protoplanetary disk. We aim to constrain the nitrogen chemistry and the gas-phase C/O ratio in the highly asymmetric dust trap in the Oph-IRS 48 disk. Methods. We used ALMA observations of NO, CN, C ₂H, and related molecules in the Oph-IRS 48 disk. We modeled the effect of the increased dust-to-gas ratio in the dust trap on the physical and chemical structure using a dedicated nitrogen chemistry network in the thermochemical code DALI. Furthermore, we explored how ice sublimation contributes to the observed emission lines. Finally, we used the model to put constraints on the nitrogen-bearing ices. Results. Nitric oxide (NO) is only observed at the location of the dust trap, but CN and C ₂H are not detected in the Oph-IRS 48 disk. This results in an CN/NO column density ratio of <0.05 and thus a low C/O ratio at the location of the dust trap. Models show that the dust trap cools the disk midplane down to ∼30 K, just above the NO sublimation temperature of ∼25 K. The main gas-phase formation pathways to NO though OH and NH in the fiducial model predict NO emission that is an order of magnitude lower than what has been observed. The gaseous NO column density can be increased by factors ranging from 2.8 to 10 when the H ₂O and NH ₃ gas abundances are significantly boosted by ice sublimation. However, these models are inconsistent with the upper limits on the H ₂O and OH column densities derived from Herschel PACS observations and the upper limit on CN derived from ALMA observations. As the models require an additional source of NO to explain its detection, the NO seen in the observations is likely the photodissociation product of a larger molecule sublimating from the ices. The non-detection of CN provides a tighter constraint on the disk C/O ratio than the C ₂H upper limit. Conclusions. We propose that the NO emission in the Oph-IRS 48 disk is closely related to the nitrogen-bearing ices sublimating in the dust trap. The non-detection of CN constrains the C/O ratio both inside and outside the dust trap to be <1 if all nitrogen initially starts as N ₂ and ≤ 0.6,

Context. Complex organic species are known to be abundant toward low- and high-mass protostars. No statistical study of these species toward a large sample of high-mass protostars with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) has been carried out so far. Aims. We aim to study six N-bearing species: methyl cyanide (CH3CN), isocyanic acid (HNCO), formamide (NH2CHO), ethyl cyanide (C2H5CN), vinyl cyanide (C2H3CN) and methylamine (CH3NH2) in a large sample of line-rich high-mass protostars. Methods. From the ALMA Evolutionary study of High Mass Protocluster Formation in the Galaxy survey, 37 of the most line-rich hot molecular cores with ∼ 1"angular resolution are selected. Next, we fit their spectra and find column densities and excitation temperatures of the N-bearing species mentioned above, in addition to methanol (CH3OH) to be used as a reference species. Finally, we compare our column densities with those in other low- and high-mass protostars. Results. CH3OH, CH3CN and HNCO are detected in all sources in our sample, whereas C2H3CN and CH3NH2 are (tentatively) detected in ∼ 78 and ∼ 32% of the sources. We find three groups of species when comparing their excitation temperatures: hot (NH2CHO; Tex3 250 K), warm (C2H3CN, HN13CO and CH313CN; 100 K 2 Tex2 250 K) and cold species (CH3OH and CH3NH2; Tex2 100 K). This temperature segregation reflects the trend seen in the sublimation temperature of these molecules and validates the idea that complex organic emission shows an onion-like structure around protostars. Moreover, the molecules studied here show constant column density ratios across low- and high-mass protostars with scatter less than a factor ∼ 3 around the mean. Conclusions. The constant column density ratios point to a common formation environment of complex organics or their precursors, most likely in the pre-stellar ices. The scatter around the mean of the ratios, although small, varies depending on the species considered. This spread can either have a physical origin (source structure, line or dust optical depth) or a chemical one. Formamide is most prone to the physical effects as it is tracing the closest regions to the protostars, whereas such effects are small for other species. Assuming that all molecules form in the pre-stellar ices, the scatter variations could be explained by differences in lifetimes or physical conditions of the pre-stellar clouds. If the pre-stellar lifetimes are the main factor, they should be similar for low- and high-mass protostars (within factors ∼ 2- 3).

Context. The chemical inventory of planets is determined by the physical and chemical processes that govern the early phases of star formation. Nitrogen-bearing species are of interest as many provide crucial precursors in the formation of life-related matter. Aims. The aim is to investigate nitrogen-bearing complex organic molecules towards two deeply embedded Class 0 low-mass protostars (Perseus B1-c and Serpens S68N) at millimetre wavelengths with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Next, the results of the detected nitrogen-bearing species are compared with those of oxygen-bearing species for the same and other sources. The similarities and differences are used as further input to investigate the underlying formation pathways. Methods. ALMA observations of B1-c and S68N in Band 6 (~1 mm) and Band 5 (~2 mm) are studied at ~0.5′′ resolution, complemented by Band 3 (~3 mm) data in a ~2.5′′ beam. The spectra are analysed for nitrogen-bearing species using the CASSIS spectral analysis tool, and the column densities and excitation temperatures are determined. A toy model is developed to investigate the effect of source structure on the molecular emission. Results. Formamide (NH2CHO), ethyl cyanide (C2H5CN), isocyanic acid (HNCO, HN13CO, DNCO), and methyl cyanide (CH3CN, CH2DCN, and CHD2CN) are identified towards the investigated sources. Their abundances relative to CH3OH and HNCO are similar for the two sources, with column densities that are typically an order of magnitude lower than those of oxygen-bearing species. The largest variations, of an order of magnitude, are seen for NH2CHO abundance ratios with respect to HNCO and CH3OH and do not correlate with the protostellar luminosity. In addition, within uncertainties, the nitrogen-bearing species have similar excitation temperatures to those of oxygen-bearing species (~100-300 K). The measured excitation temperatures are larger than the sublimation temperatures for the respective species. Conclusions. The similarity of most abundances with respect to HNCO for the investigated sources, including those of CH2DCN and CHD2CN, hints at a shared chemical history, especially the high D-to-H ratio in cold regions prior to star formation. However, some of the variations in abundances may reflect the sensitivity of the chemistry to local conditions such as temperature (e.g. NH2CHO), while others may arise from differences in the emitting areas of the molecules linked to their different binding energies in the ice. The excitation temperatures likely reflect the mass-weighted kinetic temperature of a gas that follows a power law structure. The two sources discussed in this work add to the small number of sources that have been subjected to such a detailed chemical analysis on Solar System scales. Future data from the James Webb Space Telescope will allow a direct comparison between the ice and gas abundances of both smaller and larger nitrogen-bearing species.

Aims. Methyl isocyanate (CH3NCO) and glycolonitrile (HOCH2CN) are isomers and prebiotic molecules that are involved in the formation of peptide structures and the nucleobase adenine, respectively. These two species are investigated to study the interstellar chemistry of cyanides (CN) and isocyanates (NCO) and to gain insight into the reservoir of interstellar prebiotic molecules.Methods. ALMA observations of the intermediate-mass Class 0 protostar Serpens SMM1-a and ALMA-PILS data of the low-mass Class 0 protostar IRAS 16293B are used. Spectra are analysed with the CASSIS line analysis software package in order to identify and characterise molecules.Results. CH3NCO, HOCH2CN, and various other molecules are detected towards SMM1-a. HOCH2CN is identified in the PILS data towards IRAS 16293B in a spectrum extracted at a half-beam offset position from the peak continuum. CH3NCO and HOCH2CN are equally abundant in SMM1-a at [X]/[CH3OH] of 5.3 × 10−4 and 6.2 × 10−4, respectively. A comparison between SMM1-a and IRAS 16293B shows that HOCH2CN and HNCO are more abundant in the former source, but CH3NCO abundances do not differ significantly. Data from other sources are used to show that the [CH3NCO]/[HNCO] ratio is similar in all these sources within ~10%.Conclusions. The new detections of CH3NCO and HOCH2CN are additional evidence for a large interstellar reservoir of prebiotic molecules that can contribute to the formation of biomolecules on planets. The equal abundances of these molecules in SMM1-a indicate that their formation is driven by kinetic processes instead of thermodynamic equilibrium, which would drive the chemistry to one product. HOCH2CN is found to be much more abundant in SMM1-a than in IRAS 16293B. From the observational data, it is difficult to indicate a formation pathway for HOCH2CN, but the thermal Strecker-like reaction of CN− with H2CO is a possibility. The similar [CH3NCO]/[HNCO] ratios found in the available sample of studied interstellar sources indicate that these two species are either chemically related or their formation is affected by physical conditions in the same way. Both species likely form early during star formation, presumably via ice mantle reactions taking place in the dark cloud or when ice mantles are being heated in the hot core. The relatively high abundances of HOCH2CN and HNCO in SMM1-a may be explained by a prolonged stage of relatively warm ice mantles, where thermal and energetic processing of HCN in the ice results in the efficient formation of both species.</jats:p>

Context. Complex organic molecules are detected in many sources in the warm inner regions of envelopes surrounding deeply embedded protostars. Exactly how these species form remains an open question. Aims. This study aims to constrain the formation of complex organic molecules through comparisons of their abundances towards the Class 0 protostellar binary IRAS 16293-2422. Methods. We utilised observations from the ALMA Protostellar Interferometric Line Survey of IRAS 16293-2422. The species identification and the rotational temperature and column density estimation were derived by fitting the extracted spectra towards IRAS 16293-2422 A and IRAS 16293-2422 B with synthetic spectra. The majority of the work in this paper pertains to the analysis of IRAS 16293-2422 A for a comparison with the results from the other binary component, which have already been published. Results. We detect 15 different complex species, as well as 16 isotopologues towards the most luminous companion protostar IRAS 16293-2422 A. Tentative detections of an additional 11 isotopologues are reported. We also searched for and report on the first detections of methoxymethanol (CH3OCH2OH) and trans-ethyl methyl ether (t-C2H5OCH3) towards IRAS 16293-2422 B and the follow-up detection of deuterated isotopologues of acetaldehyde (CH2DCHO and CH3CDO). Twenty-four lines of doubly-deuterated methanol (CHD2OH) are also identified. Conclusions. The comparison between the two protostars of the binary system shows significant differences in abundance for some of the species, which are partially correlated to their spatial distribution. The spatial distribution is consistent with the sublimation temperature of the species; those with higher expected sublimation temperatures are located in the most compact region of the hot corino towards IRAS 16293-2422 A. This spatial differentiation is not resolved in IRAS 16293-2422 B and will require observations at a higher angular resolution. In parallel, the list of identified CHD2OH lines shows the need of accurate spectroscopic data including their line strength.

The identification of complex organic molecules, COMs, in inter- A nd circumstellar gas phase environments is steadily increasing. The formation of such COMs takes largely place on the icy dust grains, as has been shown in recent laboratory studies. Until now solid state features of smaller molecular species have been directly identified in these environments. The presented work on acetaldehyde (CH3CHO), ethanol (CH3CH2OH), and dimethyl ether (CH3OCH3) in different astronomically relevant ice environments and for temperatures in the range 15 to 160 Kelvin, provides the necessary tools to guide or interpret astronomical observations, specifically for upcoming James Webb Space Telescope observations.

Nitrogen oxides are thought to play a significant role as a nitrogen reservoir and to potentially participate in the formation of more complex species. Until now, only NO, NO, and HNO have been detected in the interstellar medium. We report the first interstellar detection of nitrous acid (HONO). Twelve lines were identified towards component B of the low-mass protostellar binary IRAS 16293-2422 with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, at the position where NO and NO have previously been seen. A local thermodynamic equilibrium model was used to derive the column density (∼9 × 1014 cm in a 0 .″5 beam) and excitation temperature (∼100 K) of this molecule. HNO, NO, NO+, and HNO3 were also searched for in the data, but not detected. We simulated the HONO formation using an updated version of the chemical code Nautilus and compared the results with the observations. The chemical model is able to reproduce satisfactorily the HONO, NO, and NO abundances, but not the NO, HNO, and NHOH abundances. This could be due to some thermal desorption mechanisms being destructive and therefore limiting the amount of HNO and NHOH present in the gas phase. Other options are UV photodestruction of these species in ices or missing reactions potentially relevant at protostellar temperatures.

Molecules with an amide functional group resemble peptide bonds, the molecular bridges that connect amino acids, and may thus be relevant in processes that lead to the formation of life. In this study, the solid state formation of some of the smallest amides is investigated in the laboratory. To this end, CH4:HNCO ice mixtures at 20 K are irradiated with far-UV photons, where the radiation is used as a tool to produce the radicals required for the formation of the amides. Products are identified and investigated with infrared spectroscopy and temperature-programmed desorption mass spectrometry. The laboratory data show that NH₂CHO, CH₃NCO, NH₂C(O)NH₂, CH₃ C(O)NH₂, and CH₃NH₂ can simultaneously be formed. The NH₂CO radical is found to be key in the formation of larger amides. In parallel, ALMA observations towards the low-mass protostar IRAS 16293-2422B are analysed in search of CH₃NHCHO (N-methylformamide) and CH₃C(O)NH₂ (acetamide). CH₃C(O)NH₂ is tentatively detected towards IRAS 16293-2422B at an abundance comparable with those found towards high-mass sources. The combined laboratory and observational data indicate that NH₂CHO and CH₃C(O)NH₂ are chemically linked and form in the ice mantles of interstellar dust grains. A solid-state reaction network for the formation of these amides is proposed.

Exoplanet Proxima b will be an important laboratory for the search for extraterrestrial life for the decades ahead. Here, we discuss the prospects of detecting carbon dioxide at 15 μm using a spectral filtering technique with the Medium Resolution Spectrograph (MRS) mode of the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). At superior conjunction, the planet is expected to show a contrast of up to 100 ppm with respect to the star. At a spectral resolving power of R = 1790-2640, about 100 spectral CO₂ features are visible within the 13.2-15.8 μm (3B) band, which can be combined to boost the planet atmospheric signal by a factor of 3-4, depending on the atmospheric temperature structure and CO₂ abundance. If atmospheric conditions are favorable (assuming an Earth-like atmosphere), with this new application to the cross-correlation technique, carbon dioxide can be detected within a few days of JWST observations. However, this can only be achieved if both the instrumental spectral response and the stellar spectrum can be determined to a relative precision of ≤1 10^-4 between adjacent spectral channels. Absolute flux calibration is not required, and the method is insensitive to the strong broadband variability of the host star. Precise calibration of the spectral features of the host star may only be attainable by obtaining deep observations of the system during inferior conjunction that serve as a reference. The high-pass filter spectroscopic technique with the MIRI MRS can be tested on warm Jupiters, Neptunes, and super-Earths with significantly higher planet/star contrast ratios than the Proxima system.
