The through-thickness compressive behavior of fabric reinforcements is crucial in liquid composite molding manufacturing processes. Predictive simulations of the compressive response are thus necessary to enable a virtual processing workflow. These are complex however, as the compressive behavior of the reinforcement fabrics is non-linear. Altough virtual fiber modeling has proven to be a strong kinematical tool, it cannot predict the compressive response due to the lack of bending stiffness in the virtual fibers. Here, we describe a solution that enables predictive compressive simulations through hybrid virtual fibers. It is based on an overlay mesh-element technique, combining both (i) finite elements that determine the in-plane fiber properties as well as (ii) finite elements that determine out-of-plane fiber bending. Using these hybrid virtual fibers, the through-thickness compression of a twill woven fabric ply is simulated and experimentally validated using both μCT-based as compliance-based measurements. Excellent agreement between simulation and experiment is obtained for the right set of input parameters.@en

This recommendation is devoted to testing the resistance of natural stone and fired-clay brick units against salt crystallization. The procedure was developed by the RILEM TC 271-ASC to evaluate the durability of porous building materials against salt crystallization through a laboratory method that allows for accelerated testing without compromising the reliability of the results. The new procedure is designed to replicate salt damage caused by crystallization near the surface of materials as a result of capillary transport and evaporation. A new approach is proposed that considers the presence of two stages in the salt crystallization test. In the first, the accumulation stage, salts gradually accumulate on or near the surface of the material due to evaporation. In the second, the propagation stage, damage initiates and develops due to changes in moisture content and relative humidity that trigger salt dissolution and crystallization cycles. To achieve this, two types of salt were tested, namely sodium chloride and sodium sulphate, with each salt tested separately. A methodology for assessing the salt-induced damage is proposed, which includes visual and photographical observations and measurement of material loss. The procedure has been preliminarily validated in round robin tests.@en

The durability of building materials with respect to salt crystallization is commonly determined by accelerated weathering tests, carried out in the laboratory. An effective laboratory weathering test should assess the durability and, in the case of conservation of historic buildings, the compatibility of repair materials with those existing. Besides, the test should provide reliable results within a reasonable period of time, accelerating the deterioration process without however altering its mechanism. Despite several national and international standards, recommendations and guidelines, a commonly accepted testing protocol does not yet exist. Researchers often develop and apply their own procedure, a fact that complicates comparison between different studies. The RILEM Technical Committee 271 ASC has been set up with the scope of developing improved test procedures for the assessment of the behaviour of materials under the influence of salt crystallization, which should overcome the limitations of existing standards and recommendations. This paper constitutes one of the first results of the work of the Technical Committee. It critically reviews the literature on salt crystallization tests, identifies advantages and limitations of the several test protocols and provides new ideas for the development of improved salt crystallization procedures.@en

The microstructure of alkali-reactive aggregates, especially the spatial distribution of the pore and reactive silica phase, plays a significant role in the process of the alkali silica reaction (ASR) in concrete, as it determines not only the reaction front of ASR but also the localization of the produced expansive product from where the cracking begins. However, the microstructure of the aggregate was either simplified or neglected in the current ASR simulation models. Due to the various particle sizes and heterogeneous distribution of the reactive silica in the aggregate, it is difficult to obtain a representative microstructure at a desired voxel size by using non-destructive computed tomography (CT) or focused ion beam milling combined with scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM). In order to fill this gap, this paper proposed a model that simulates the microstructures of the alkali-reactive aggregate based on 2D images. Five representative 3D microstructures with different pore and quartz fractions were simulated from SEM images. The simulated fraction, scattering density, as well as the autocorrelation function (ACF) of pore and quartz agreed well with the original ones. A mm concrete cube with irregular coarse aggregates was then simulated with the aggregate assembled by the five representative microstructures. The average pore (at microscale m) and quartz fractions of the cube matched well with the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) results. The simulated microstructures can be used as a basis for simulation of the chemical reaction of ASR at a microscale.@en

Superabsorbent Polymers (SAP) have been recently subject of investigation as smart admixtures for cement-based materials. The properties of these polymers enable their use for internal curing, increasing freeze/thaw resistance, boosting autogenous self-healing and providing a crack self-sealing effect in cementitious composites. Except for the earliest application, the functioning of these beneficial effects invloves the absorption by the polymers of ingress water in the hardened cementitious matrix and later release, as well as their capacity to complete multiple absorption/desorption cycles. In this work, the absorption of water in mortar with superabsorbent polymers is monitored during the first 60 min of absorption through micro-CT. The experimental series included the presence of cracks. The registration and differentiation of sub-minute (18 s) scans enabled the individuation of bulk water content distribution in the mortar with a resolution of 55 μm. The swollen volume of SAP could also be quantified and studied in time. The results point out that although embedded SAP absorb water from the matrix, this absorption is slow and reduced with respect to water absorption during mixing for the used SAP. Same effect is observed for SAP in the cracks.@en
