This paper develops a counter-mapping approach to informal public performance spaces. It examines how these spaces take shape through everyday negotiations, rhythmic practices and micro-spatial tactics. The mapping techniques constitute counter-mapping because they intentionally trace patterns of use that remain absent from official zoning maps and scenic masterplans, making visible the lived routines and spatial claims of elderly rural migrants that formal representations typically overlook. These mapped rhythms also provide a basis for small design and management adjustments that move beyond the limits of static base-maps and enforcement-led zoning. The analysis draws on the concept of place ballet to interpret these mappings and examine the temporal routines, spatial rhythms and power relations embedded in public performances. Focusing on elderly rural migrants in Jinan, China, particularly within the city’s historic core and the renowned Daming Lake Park, the study uses participant observation, interviews and mapping techniques organised around five analytical lenses: timeline of events; trajectories, movements, rhythm and power; layout and spatial organisation; environmental factors; and props, imagination and cultural symbols. These analyses reveal how performance practices function both as cultural expression and as a means of fostering social connection and emotional resilience, while also uncovering the complex dynamics of everyday spatial practice.

Basisbegrippen architectuur, landschapsarchitectuur, stedenbouw biedt een introductie op zestien fundamentele begrippen voor de (toekomstige) ruimtelijk ontwerper. Basisbegrippen zijn de sleutel tot het verwoorden en verbeelden van ideeën en denkbeelden binnen de bouwkunde. Een goede beheersing van de veelgebruikte begrippen binnen de vakgebieden architectuur, landschapsarchitectuur en stedenbouw maakt het mogelijk om in een ontwerpproces te communiceren met vakgenoten, opdrachtgevers, (toekomstige) gebruikers en het grote publiek.

Basisbegrippen architectuur, landschapsarchitectuur, stedenbouw is samengesteld door het team ‘Grondslagen’ verbonden aan de faculteit Bouwkunde van de TU Delft. Het handboek bevat bijdragen van Klaske Havik, Willemijn Wilms Floet, Saskia de Wit, Gregory Bracken, Chris Woltjes, Robin Ringel.

Het boek Academische Vaardigheden voor Bouwkundigen geeft een verdiepend beeld van bouwkunde als wetenschappelijke discipline, gaat expliciet in op de relatie tussen ontwerp en onderzoek en richt zich met name op praktische vaardigheden die bouwkundestudenten ontwikkelen gedurende hun bacheloropleiding in Delft. Het boek is opgebouwd uit vier delen. Deel A richt zich op de plaats van bouwkunde binnen de wetenschap. Deel B richt zich op basisvaardigheden: algemene academische vaardigheden voor bouwkundigen. Deel C diept specifieke bouwkundige methoden van onderzoek uit. Deel D, het laatste deel, is enerzijds gericht op de praktijk en anderzijds op reflectie. Door deze brede opzet kan het boek niet alleen direct gebruikt worden door studenten en docenten in de leerlijn Academische Vaardigheden, maar juist ook in de andere leerlijnen en modulen. Tevens is het boek een naslagwerk voor andere Bouwkunde- en Architectuuropleidingen in binnen- en buitenland dat inzicht geeft hoe wij binnen de faculteit Bouwkunde van de TU Delft aankijken tegen het vakgebied en welke academische vaardigheden daar op bachelorniveau bij horen.

In this contribution I will share with you, challenged by the covid-19 pandemic, our attempts to adapt a course intended to experience and study the European city in real life, into an online format. I will first introduce the bachelor (undergraduate) course ‘Foundations’ and the role that the excursion has in the curriculum of architecture at TU Delft. Then I will discuss how the adaption to the pandemic situation in 2020 has resulted in different approaches within the course, and reflect upon them in the perspective of ‘travel pedagogies.

For pressing and complex spatial or social urban agendas, understanding and interpreting place has always been an important issue. In-depth and close explorative reading of a site—in which drawing, modeling and writing (the basic tools of architecture) become instruments to open up new perspectives—is vital for imagining site-specific architectural possibilities. We thus see creative imagination, related to and emerging from place, as a crucial source of innovation. As educators, therefore, we need to examine how to guide students explore their imaginative faculties. Our pedagogic approach is founded upon the philosophical thought of phenomenology, theory on place, findings from neuroscience, and examination of architectural precedents. Based on these underpinnings we developed a course that focused on enhancing students’ spatial imagination and challenged them to think how the tools of architectural analysis and design can offer new imaginative ways to approach the local, social and historical aspects of a place. The paper illustrates how this framework is brought into architectural education by engaging the example of “Methods of Analysis and Imagination,” a master level elective course we taught in 2019. It presents the course’s overarching structure, as it unfolded over three intensive workshops on drawing, modeling and writing respectively. Investigating a selected site—through readings, conversations, exercises, hands-on and in situ assignments—the three workshops explored the way imagination can help us look at a place, and discover new and unique spatial or architectural relationships lurking in the banal and the ordinary. Through selected students’ work the paper concludes situating the course in an educational context that cares to expand spatial and architectural imagination, trusting imagination to be the productive and valuable answer to the many critical contemporary conditions we face as architects.

Er zijn ontwerpers die aan allerlei verschillende opgaven werken, maar ook specialisten in bijvoorbeeld parkontwerp, de rehabilitatie van achterstandswijken, woningbouw, verbouwingen, ziekenhuizen of publieke gebouwen en noem maar op. In de keuze om aan bepaalde opdrachten te werken spelen ook politieke en sociaalmaatschappelijke (en vroeger ook religieuze) opvattingen en betrokkenheid. Oases in de Stad brengt een ode aan de architectuur van hofjes. Het verklaart waarom hofjes al zes eeuwen lang een natuurlijk en aantrekkelijk onderdeel zijn van het stedelijk weefsel, en steeds nieuwe generaties aanspreken. De kracht van de hofjesarchitectuur is het vermogen tot vernieuwing van een middeleeuws archetype – een besloten woonomgeving rond een groene gemeenschappelijke tuin. Urban Oases is an ode to the architecture of Dutch hofjes. It explains why hofjes have been a natural and attractive part of the urban fabric of the Netherlands for six centuries and why they continue to appeal to new generations. The appeal of hofje architecture lies in its ability to renew its medieval archetype - an enclosed living environment around a shared green garden. Hofjes allow both residents and visitors to enjoy an especially serene and intimate atmosphere that contrasts surprisingly with the urban experience of hustle and bustle. The drawings, text and photography of Urban Oases take the reader to the capillaries of old Dutch cities and are relevant to an important contemporary global question: How can high-quality, compact residential environments be created in twenty-first century cities? Inspired by this extraordinary architectural heritage, the author addresses everyone who wants to contribute to a sustainable and liveable city.

Engaging the example of the course “Binckhorst: A Palimpsest of Architectural Lives”—a master level design studio—this paper addresses issues of cohabitation and coexistence between past and current actors, activities and programs in Binckhorst, The Hague. It discusses explorative methodologies of analysis and design, that aim to create innovative and anchored urban interventions for the transformation of post-industrial landscapes. Binckhorst is an exemplary case-study to this regard. Home to a 14th century Castle, a 1920s cemetery, 1950s-60s heavy industry buildings and empty offices, postmodern housing projects and contemporary refugee settlements, it currently witnesses an accelerated change. Small-scale creative industries, event venues and apartment buildings transform and redefine its architectural identity. Moreover, Binckhorst’s strategic location next to the city’s center and a major train station, has attracted the interest of local and international architects, planners and developers. The course “Binckhorst: A Palimpsest of Architectural Lives” engages the students with this rich context and guides them to develop design methods where the old and the new can be actively part of the area’s new blooming. Through innovative site analysis assignments, personal interactions with the area’s actual actors, careful and in-depth study of the Binckhorst’s heritage, a precise selection of The Hague housing typologies, and the employment of bottom-up design methodologies, the studio advocates for a pedagogical approach in which the knowledge acquired from the analysis informs every step in the design process. The studio follows a structured sequence of three phases: “Description,” “Transcription,” “Prescription” (Havik, 2014) ensuring the constant interweaving between analysis and design. It culminates in a big-scale housing project that needs to incorporate the area’s past and present layers and suggest architectural propositions that envision a future for the co-existence between the old and the new. A thorough presentation of the studio’s theoretical context, the methodological framework, the topics and parameters of investigation along with selected student’s examples, will unpack in detail the pedagogical topics addressed by this studio and suggest possible courses of action for architectural education.

Bijna alle verhalen die we lezen, horen of zien zijn gesitueerd: ze zijn gekoppeld aan een specifieke plek, of meerdere plekken. Een verhaal vertelt over gebeurtenissen die zich afspelen in de tijd, aan de hand van een bepaalde chronologische volgorde, en het vertelt evengoed over de plekken en ruimten waar die gebeurtenissen zich afspelen. Zouden we op een vergelijkbare manier, dus door het vertellen van verhalen, naar plekken kunnen kijken? Is een ‘biografie’ een bruikbare aanpak om een plek die in de loop van de tijd door meerdere gebeurtenissen is gevormd te begrijpen en beschouwen? Is het mogelijk om via een dergelijke benadering van verschillende tijdlagen de unieke betekenis van een plaats boven tafel te krijgen? In dit boek verkent landschapsonderzoekster Svava Riesto hiertoe het potentieel van de ‘landschapsbiografie’ aan de hand van de boeiende casus van de Carlsberg Brouwerij in Kopenhagen. Het boek Biography of an Industrial Landscape, Carlsberg’s Urban Spaces Retold is het resultaat van haar promotieonderzoek aan de universiteit van Kopenhagen (2015) naar de ontwikkeling van deze industriële locatie tot een dicht bebouwde stadswijk vlak bij het centrum van Kopenhagen. Via een nauwgezette beschouwing van de wetenschappelijke architectonische (en architectuurhistorische) benaderingswijzen om de specificiteit van een plek te duiden, voert Riesto een pleidooi dat niet alleen de gebouwen en hun geschiedenis omvat –zoals gangbaar in erfgoedstudies-, maar ook de (veranderende) buitenruimten, via de verhalen en andere uitingen over het gebruik en de gebruikers.

Almost all stories we read, hear or see, are placed. If a story tells about events unfolding in time through a certain chronological order (or disorder), it also tells about the places and spaces in which these events take place. In novels and films, architectural and urban spaces and landscapes often play a crucial role to situate social activities and even social conflicts. Seen from this perspective, could we also look at places through this notion of storytelling? Is the biography a productive perspective to address the multiple events that have shaped a place in time? Is it possible, through this approach, to reveal the multiple layers that constitute a “sense of place”? In this book, landscape scholar Svava Riesto investigates the potential of the “landscape biography” approach, by reviewing existing scholarship around notions of place, social space and landscape biography, and by telling the story of the life of a place loaded with history: the Carlsberg Brewery in Copenhagen.

What tools, procedures, and methods do architects use? The triptychs on display show their approach both in analytical and designerly ways. The first panel of each triptych represents an architectural question; the second panel represents a method. The third panel showcases the confrontation of that question and method. The project thus expands known architectural tools such as drawing, writing, and modelling. Through their thorough exploration of architectural tools, the presented triptychs show an in-depth understanding of the specific qualities of the architectural project. A better insight into the capacity of these methods supports more locally responsive and socially inclusive architecture, aiming for an urban architecture of collectivity.

Bestaande projecten vormen een belangrijke bron van kennis voor het maken van architectonische en stedebouwkundige ontwerpen. De Delftse methode van plananalyse onderzoekt plannen aan de hand van tekeningen, door te tekenen en
maquettes te maken, en dit alles samen te vatten in driedimensionale kijkdozen.

Het hofje heeft een vaste plek veroverd in ons collectiefgeheugen – Nederlanders hebben er onmiddellijk beelden bij: ze zien stille engroene oases te midden van de stedelijke drukte, intieme en beschutte rijenhuisjes rondom een tuin. Het hofje is een uiterstherkenbaar concept, maar, paradoxaal genoeg, ook vaak lastig aan te wijzen.Want het hofje blijkt in veel gevallen ook een goed verborgen architectonischeschat,  verscholen achter muren, gevels,met de ingang subtiel weggewerkt in het straatbeeld.Die bijzondere combinatie van herkenbaarheid enverborgenheid heeft iets raadselachtigs en oefent al eeuwenlang aantrekkingskracht uit op stichters, bewoners,(stads-)architecten, stadsbestuurders, stedenbouwers en anderegeïnteresseerden.
