Conference for Artistic and Architectural Research & Collective Evaluation of Design-driven Doctoral Training Programme

CA2RE / CA2RE+, the Conference for Artistic and Architectural Research, is dedicated to promoting Design-Driven Doctoral Research (DDDr) through its conference series. This initiative aims to strengthen and expand the community of researchers interested in this subject. The Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment at Delft University of Technology has gladly provided the platform for this noteworthy conference. The central theme of this event revolves around the “RECOMMENDATION” for Design-Driven Doctoral Research. This theme is a natural progression from the main topics explored in the previous CA2RE+ conferences, which included OBSERVATION, SHARING, COMPARISON, REFLECTION, and FRAMEWORK. Emerging Urban Perspectives

The book is about future cities and possible scenarios for city futures. A question central to this book is how to face urban challenges while providing and safeguarding positive outcomes, concerned with the improvement of the quality of urban life: How can future cities be made more liveable, sustainable, and resilient? How can cities continue to provide a wide range of opportunities for all necessities of life? To tackle these complex questions, the book includes a collection of 25 articles written by 37 emerging voices in urban design and research. Together, they contribute from a diverse spectrum of interest, expertise, academic disciplines, and practice. They approach the built environment from a socio-cultural, respectively socio-economic perspective, from the viewpoint of urban policy and public health, with environmental concerns for urban sustainability and circularity in mind, and through the lens of urban computer and data science, providing a take on urban digitalization and transformation of cities into ‘smart’ cities. Together, their contributions reflect the complexity and diversity of challenges and opportunities underpinning future cities.

Experiences in Multidisciplinary Education

The Cross Domain City of the Future Graduation Lab, situated in the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment at TU Delft, has been a pioneer in experimenting with a multidisciplinary approach to education on the built environment. Drawing upon this expertise over the past years, this book reflects on multidisciplinarity in the built environment and its implementation in education on the built environment. How should one approach multidisciplinarity in education and practice? What encompasses its core elements, benefits, and challenges? By addressing these questions, the book aims to inform students and practitioners within the realm of the built environment by sharing insights from experiences in multidisciplinary education. It presents eight conclusions regarding the future of multidisciplinary education and, thereby, seeks to contribute to a more humane and sustainable future for cities: Process is central to multidisciplinary collaboration. Negotiating positions, ensuring an environment of respect, balance and open-mindedness, and setting a common vocabulary. Multidisciplinarity can be a way to foster innovation. It triggers complementarity and confrontation. As with any innovation, there is potential for greater outcomes, but, at the same time, extra risks emerge. These need to be managed. Multidisciplinarity could be better integrated into organisational structures. Disciplinarity and multidisciplinarity are in mutual coexistence. They are inseparable. They can complement and contradict each other. Problem precedes solution, not the opposite. Framing the problem, or 'problematizing', is a considerable share of the actual solution. This is particularly applicable to multidisciplinarity. Multidisciplinarity is by nature composed of fluid boundaries. Navigating through an enormous diversity of perspectives requires agility, flexibility, independence, spirit of adventure and embracing uncertainty. Professionals should be trained as 'T-shape': grounded in their field while able to dialogue with other fields. Both generalists and specialists are needed. De aanpak van stedelijke transformatieopgaven gaat op de schop. Er is immers onvoldoende ruimte om de grote uitdagingen van vandaag – op het vlak van klimaat, energie, circulaire economie, mobiliteit en huisvesting – een plek te geven. Hoog tijd dat we met een driedimensionale bril naar onze steden leren kijken en de openbare ruimte en gebouwen in samenhang bekijken met de ondergrond. Door opgaven aan te pakken vanuit de doorsnede (in plaats van de plattegrond) komen nieuwe en verrassende oplossingen op tafel, die niet alleen leiden tot een verbetering van de leefomgeving, maar ook multifunctioneel ruimtegebruik in de hand werken. MSc 2 Elective Design Studio AR0067 Spring 2018–2019

At TU Delft, in the interdisciplinary MSc II Design Studio Architecture & Urban Design, students of the master tracks Architecture, Urbanism and Landscape Architecture of the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment work closely together. The integrative approach of this graduate course setting allows the students to examine urban space as architectural space and architectural space as urban space. Through an experimental design method, developed during the 2018 national research project Stad van de Toekomst,1 the studio is founded on the interest in the intervention in the built environment and its immediate effect on architecture and urban design. The global framework of the Stad van de Toekomst project is directly projected on Amsterdam Sloterdijk Station and Boston South Station areas, compressed and applied to this ten-week graduate course. Taken from a wider angle, the project is motivated by urgent social as well as local tasks in the urban areas, varying from housing demand, social inclusiveness, new economy, climate adaptation, and the like, taking into account the transitions in energy, mobility, circularity, and digitization. This echoes through in the central question of the Stad van de Toekomst project: How can we design and develop a transformation area in an integral way into an attractive and future-proof urban environment? Which approaches and scenarios of smart (multimodal) mobility can be tested and applied to the future urban development of Haven-Stad, Amsterdam? This is the main question the participants of the 2019 Summer School started working on. Exploring the role of stations in future metropolitan areas from a French and Dutch perspective

At the main point of intersection between the railway and the city, stations are key elements in the organization of the intermodal transport as well as catalysts of urban developments in metropolises, medium and small cities. The focus of this publication is to explore the enrichment of a renewed approach of railway stations as intermodal nodes, therefore acting as breeding grounds for both urban and social developments.
This book has been initiated and built upon several activities currently running at the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS Institute), Delft University of Technology (DIMI, Delft Deltas Infrastructure Mobility Initiative and Department of Architecture of the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment) and University of Paris-Est (l’École d’Urbanisme de Paris). These activities have been framed within the context of two rapidly developing metropolitan areas: Randstad in the Netherlands and Métropole du Grand Paris in the Ile de France. This volume forms the basis for a research on the ‘role of stations in future metropolitan areas’ with the ambition to link the two countries, learning from their different cities and distinct geographical context through comparable mobility challenges on the levels of the inner city, suburban and peripheral areas. ...

Urban areas have been caught up in a turbulent process of transformation over the past 50 years and changes have been rapid, with issues such as mobility, nature, water management, energy use and public space featuring prominently. In each Olympic year since 1988, the Faculty of Architecture at Delft University of Technology has held an international conference focusing on the connection between research and design, exploring the field of tension between science, technology and art.

This book presents the proceedings of the latest in this series of conferences: New Urban Configurations, held in Delft, the Netherlands, in October 2012 in collaboration with the European Association for Architectural Education (EAAE) and the International Seminar on Urban Form (ISUF). This edition of the conference discussed the role and critical potential of the architectural project in the transformation process of cities and territories that leads to new urban configurations. The publication contains all 140 accepted papers and a selection of the keynote lectures presented at the conference. The papers have been grouped into five main themes: innovation in building typology; infrastructure and the city; complex urban projects; green spaces, and delta urbanism.
