Hooimeijer, J.A. Kuijper, Gijsbert Schuur
––– The approach to urban transformation tasks is undergoing a major overhaul. After all, there is insufficient space to accommodate today's major challenges—in the areas of climate, energy, circular economy, mobility, and housing. It is time we learn to look at our cities through three-dimensional glasses and to view the public space and buildings in relation to the subsurface. By tackling tasks from the cross-section (instead of the floor plan), new and surprising solutions are brought to the table, which not only lead to an improvement of the living environment but also encourage multifunctional use of space. Multidisciplinary design teams set to work in Amsterdam, Leuven, Maastricht, Mechelen, Ostend, and Rotterdam. Renowned experts scrutinize design research and reflect on the importance of the subsurface and designing from the cross section. This publication is the result of a collaboration between TU Delft,Centrum voor Ondergronds Bouwen, the Departement Omgeving, and the Vereniging Deltametropool ...
Book (2022) - R. Cavallo, F. Berlingieri, J.J. de Boer, Emilia Corradi
A spatial lens on Climate Change dynamics in urban transitions considering the growing importance that the urban environments assume within contemporary territorial transformations yet little room is offered within market-driven societies to critically reflect the spatial impact that cities face vis-à-vis the urgencies for environmental rebalancing. It embraces a wide range of phenomena we all live and experience nowadays, not only incidentally but more in a structural way, forcing us to rethink our present state and explore futures. Transitions embody the fluctuating form of late capitalism with its raisings and disruptions. Regarding the environmental conditions, they are affecting the world regions' habitability, the phenomenon of progressive urbanization versus agricultural land abandonment (UN 2018). With these premises, transitions seem to be a proper reference for an interdisciplinary and conceptual frame addressing the transformation of urban and metropolitan contexts, which will be the leading players for the coming decades. ...

The design study The City of the Future addresses the major challenges that our cities are facing. Ten teams of professionals from a broad range of disciplines conducted research by design into a square kilometre of one of the five largest cities in the Netherlands - Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, and Eindhoven. Their outcome is inspiring visualization and concrete prospects for action suggest ways in which the major transitions of our time can play out in our cities. They show a city of the future thet is climate-proof, energy-, and mobility-smart, thet stimulates encounter and is a pleasant place to live and work for everyone. 'The City of the Future: Ten Design Strategies for Five Locations' presents the results of the study in word and images. The work of teams is accompanied by articles and interviews with those involved in The City of the Future project. It is supplemented with work by students from Delft University of Technology. The study shows the city of the future through the eyes of designers and offers challenging views that we can start working with today. ...
