In deze scriptie gaan we twee wiskundige objecten onderzoeken, het ultrafilter en de ultramacht. Zodra je in de wiskunde een nieuw object hebt bedacht zijn de eerste twee vragen die je stelt altijd 1) bestaat het? en 2) Als het bestaat, is het dan uniek, of zijn er meerdere? Nou is dat voor een ultrafilter relatief makkelijk te beantwoorden. In hoofdstuk 1 zijn we bezig om allerlei nuttige eigenschappen van het ultrafilter te onderzoeken. Voor een ultramacht echter is het wel duidelijk dat die bestaat, maar het kost nog veel werk om uit te vinden of er meerdere zijn. Bij dat antwoord speelt de Continuümhypothese een belangrijke rol. In de wiskunde is het duidelijk dat de natuurlijke getallen N en de reële getallen R verschillende soorten oneindig zijn. De Continuumhypothese stelt dat er geen enkele andere soort oneindigheid tussen N en R ligt. Het blijkt dat het antwoord op de vraag “Zijn er twee verschillende ultramachten?” precies samenhangt met of de Continuümhypothese waar is. Om tot dit antwoord te komen gaan we een eigenschap van ultramachten onderzoeken genaamd “gaten”. We kunnen dan bij verwerping van de Continuümhypothese twee ultramachten aanwijzen die verschillende gaten hebben en dus verschillend zijn.

Topos theory and quantum mechanics are both known for having a logic that is different from ordinary logic. With this in mind, much work has been done on unifying these two fields. Loveridge, Dridi and Raussendorf apply this unification to measurement-based quantum computation [14], revealing links between computation, contextuality and the failure of the law of excluded middle in the topoi associated with each computation. We review their work, fill in gaps, follow their research suggestion and have some criticism. Our main original finding is a formula, in the formal language of the topos associated with a computation, that expresses that the computation is deterministic.

Waste-to-energy is the process of generating energy from municipal waste. The most conventional energy recovery method is incineration, which takes place at a waste-to-energy plant. The incoming waste is collected in a bunker, where an overhead crane stacks and mixes the material before feeding it to the furnaces. The more homogeneous the waste reaches the furnaces, the more stable the incineration process. In automated mode, crane movements are controlled by the generation and execution of crane orders.

The waste crane scheduling problem is formulated as a mixed integer linear program, describing the scheduling of crane orders based on order characteristics such as type, origin and destination. The objective of the problem is to optimise the crane performance, which is interpreted as the minimisation of the total crane driving time while performing as many mixing orders as possible.

In the base model, simulated order schedules are resequenced. Given the type, origin and destination of the orders, the starting times are reconsidered. The obtained reductions in total driving time compared to the simulation model vary from 2% to 7%, depending on the crane strategy, whether stacking or mixing is allowed, and the maximum time between the generation and completion of feeding orders. Since the order types are given as input, the number of mixing orders is fixed.
In the extended model, the determination of the order characteristics is included in the scheduling process. Unfortunately, the size of the model increases so fast over time that 15 minutes proved to be the maximum length of a scheduling period for which a solution could be obtained. With a rolling horizon approximation, a stacking period of 10 hours has been scheduled.

Decision rules on the generation of orders are derived from the output of the optimisation models. These decision rules are implemented in the simulation model. The obtained results are assessed based on key performance indicators mainly related to the mix quality. The rules resulted in up to 35% more mixing orders, which translates into material being mixed more often, not necessarily in more material being mixed.

This thesis focusses on good ultrafilters. Firstly ultrafilters are introduced and the definition of a good ultrafilter is given. Next the proof that good ultrafilters exists is discussed. Lastly it is shown that good ultrafilters make ultraproducts saturated. 

In dit bachelor eindproject kijken we naar de integreerbaarheid van eindige elementaire functies. Soms heb je het vermoeden dat een functie geen primitieve heeft in eindige termen, maar dan is dat vaak lastig om te bewijzen. Aan de hand van de stelling van Liouville-Rosenlicht gaan we in een aantal van zulke gevallen bewijzen dat de gevraagde primitieve niet bestaat. Je kunt er in dat proces ook achter komen dat de functie toch wel zo'n primitieve heeft. Dan krijg je met deze stelling vaak ook een aardig beeld van hoe de primitieve er ongeveer uit zou moeten zien. Voor het bewijzen van de stelling van Liouville-Rosenlicht duiken we een stuk de differentiaalalgebra in.
