Abstract

The project proposes a transformation of the Dominican Monastery in Tallinn, into a
contemporary version of the monastery for the 21st century. It explores an alternative
reinterpretation of ‘spiritual’ architecture, by working with a light and open structure where spaces are interconnected, instead of individual spaces closed off by thick walls. It offers users a counter-space to the high-paced and performative society we live in today, where they can take a breath, wind-down and reflect on themselves. This is done by a mix of library spaces, meditation spaces, yoga area’s,... where users are free to use the space they need. By transforming a heritage building, it suggests a way of dealing with heritage that has already lost part of its completeness or meaning, by giving it a purpose once again.
