BACterial Hosts for production of Bioactive phenolics from bERRY fruits (BacHBerry) was a 3-year project funded by the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) of the European Union that ran between November 2013 and October 2016. The overall aim of the project was to establish a sustainable and economically-feasible strategy for the production of novel high-value phenolic compounds isolated from berry fruits using bacterial platforms. The project aimed at covering all stages of the discovery and pre-commercialization process, including berry collection, screening and characterization of their bioactive components, identification and functional characterization of the corresponding biosynthetic pathways, and construction of Gram-positive bacterial cell factories producing phenolic compounds. Further activities included optimization of polyphenol extraction methods from bacterial cultures, scale-up of production by fermentation up to pilot scale, as well as societal and economic analyses of the processes. This review article summarizes some of the key findings obtained throughout the duration of the project.@en

It is well known, that presence of vegetation influences stability of the slope. However, the quantitative assessment of this contribution remains challenging. It is essential to develop a numerical model, which combines mechanical root reinforcement and root water uptake, and allows modelling rainfall induced landslides of vegetated slopes. Therefore a novel constitutive formulation is proposed, which is based on the modified Cam-clay model for unsaturated soils. Mechanical root reinforcement is modelled introducing a new constitutive parameter, which governs the evolution of the Cam-clay failure surface with the degree of root reinforcement. Evapotranspiration is modelled in terms of the root water uptake, defined as a sink term in the water flow continuity equation. The original concept is extended for different shapes of the root architecture in three dimensions, and combined with the mechanical model. The model is implemented in the research finite element code Comes-Geo, and in the commercial software Abaqus. The formulation is tested, performing a series of numerical examples, which allow validation of the concept. The direct shear test and the triaxial test are modelled in order to test the performance of the mechanical part of the model. In order to validate the hydrological part of the constitutive formulation, evapotranspiration from the vegetated box is simulated and compared with the experimental results. Obtained numerical results exhibit a good agreement with the experimental data. The implemented model is capable of reproducing results of basic geotechnical laboratory tests. Moreover, the constitutive formulation can be used to model rainfall induced landslides of vegetated slopes, taking into account the most important factors influencing the slope stability (root reinforcement and evapotranspiration). @en

In recent years, various functional fabrics capable of responding to multistimuli have been widely recognized as promising wearable devices. However, the obtained composite functional fabrics have only been applied in a few scenarios, rendering the achievement of multifunctional wearable application scenarios a difficult goal. Therefore, there is an urgent need to expand the diversity of wearable applications for functional fabrics. Herein, we design hydrogel composite fabrics capable of responding to multiple stimuli, including vibration, temperature, strain, and pressure, to enable wearable multiapplication scenarios. The hydrogel composite fabrics, based on nylon fabrics (NFs), are fabricated with polyacrylamide (PAM)-poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-sodium alginate (SA)-reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/NFs (PAM-PVA-SA-rGO/NFs). The PAM-PVA-SA-rGO/NFs exhibit a higher elastic stiffness coefficient (2.79 N cm-1) than the blank NFs (1.76 N cm-1), good temperature sensitivity in the range of 30-80 °C, and excellent detecting ability for urine presence with a threshold of unit area of 2.55 × 10-3 mL cm-2. The PAM-PVA-SA-rGO/NFs can not only respond to multiple stimuli but also be integrated into clothing for wearable multiapplication scenarios, such as detecting human speaking and breathing, intelligent sleeves, and diaper alarms. Additionally, the mechanisms of the above phenomena are revealed. These results indicate that the PAM-PVA-SA-rGO/NFs will provide inspiration for the development of intelligence systems, feedback devices, soft robotics, wearable devices, etc.@en

Hydrogel materials have biocompatibility, flexibility, transparency, self-healing ability, adhesion with various substrates, anti-freeze ability, and high-temperature resistance. However, the existing hydrogel devices cannot continue to operate in the case of damage, and they cannot work during the repair period, which brings great challenges and threats to life safety. Herein, we have designed a bio-inspired combinable low-power device by imitating the generation of nerve signals whose components can be disassembled and can continue to operate during the period of reconstruction. And the mechanism and determinants of the above phenomena are revealed. The results indicate that this device can establish some information interaction relationships with the body or its surroundings to reflect and identify certain changes, implying that it will possess promising potential in feedback systems, power transformers, intelligence systems, soft robotics, wearable devices, implanted electronics with flexible characteristics matching biological tissues, etc.@en

Focal beam analysis has built a bridge between the acquisition parameters on the surface and the image quality of underground targets. However, as a practical matter, it is still difficult to answer how to choose a proper acquisition geometry according to the complexity of medium, especially considering the contradictory effects of multiple reflections on spatial resolution as they can be considered to be either potential signal or additional noise, depending on the envisioned imaging technology. We introduce an order-controlled, closed-loop focal beam method in which the migration operator and the resolution function can be analysed in the process of the closed-loop migration with full control over the order of the surface and internal multiples considered. This method highlights the effects of primary and different-order multiple wavefields on the imaging resolution for different acquisition geometries and various overburden strata. We apply the method to analyse the predicted resolution of seismic acquisition geometries considering multiples as either noise or signal. Results show, in the acquisition geometry design, that when the primaries cannot provide a complete spatial illumination for the subsurface target, e.g. because of the limited-aperture acquisition geometries or the complicated overburden, we should use the closed-loop focal beam analysis to assess the contradictory effects of multiples as both signal and noise, in which the maximum order of multiples ought to be chosen according to the core aim of the acquisition analysis. We can apply the second-order closed-loop focal beam analysis to quantify the effects of acquisition geometries on multiple-wave suppression and can also perform the high-order closed-loop focal beam analysis to quantify the effects of acquisition geometries on high-resolution imaging (migration). This method can also be used to choose the optimal order of multiples in the closed-loop migration.@en

All-solid-state sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) possess the advantages of rich resources, low price, and high security, which are one of the best alternatives for large-scale energy storage systems in the future. Also, the chalcogenide solid electrolytes (CSEs) of SIBs have the characteristics of excellent room-temperature ionic conductivity (10−3-10−2 S cm−1), low activation energy (<0.6 eV), easy cold-pressing consolidation, etc. Hence, CSEs have become a very active area of all-solid-state SIB research in recent years. In this review, the modification methods and implementation technologies of CSEs are summarized, and the structure and electrochemical performance of the CSEs are discussed. Furthermore, the auxiliary function of first-principle calculations for modification is introduced. Ultimately, we describe the challenges regarding CSEs and propose some strategic suggestions.@en

All-solid-state sodium-ion battery (ASSIB) is a promising new energy storage device due to the excellent thermal stability, low flammability, high impermeability and nonvolatility, as well as riskless fire and explosion properties. The solid electrolyte plays a core role in the ASSIBs to determine their electrochemical performance. Herein, close attention is paid to effective approaches to improve the performance of solid electrolytes, including ion doping and substitution, composite method, coating method, crystal transformation method, ceramization and vitrification, etc. In particular, electrochemical window, ionic conductivity, electrochemical stability, and structural stability are also reviewed. The future development of solid electrolytes and the possible directions for improving the properties of the ASSIBs in practical applications are also prospects. This review will guide the development of solid electrolytes for the ASSIBs in future.@en

NaTi2(PO4)3 (NTP), a well-known anode material, could be used as a solid wide-band gap electrolyte. Herein, a novel solid-state sodium-ion battery (SSIB) with the thickness of electrolyte up to the millimeter level is proposed. The results of the difference in charge density investigated by the first-principles calculations imply that using the NTP nanocrystals as electrolytes to transport sodium ions is feasible. Moreover, the SSIB exhibits a high initial discharge capacity of 3250 mAh g-1 at the current density of 50 mA g-1. As compared with other previously reported SSIBs, our results are better than those reported and suggest that the NTP nanocrystals have potential application in SSIBs as solid electrolytes.@en

Previously, α-Fe2O3 nanocrystals are recognized as anode materials owing to their high capacity and multiple properties. Now, this work provides high-voltage α-Fe2O3 nanoceramics cathodes fabricated by the solvothermal and calcination processes for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Then, their structure and electrical conductivity were investigated by the first-principles calculations. Also, the SIB with the α-Fe2O3 nanoceramics cathode exhibits a high initial charge-specific capacity of 692.5 mA h g-1 from 2.0 to 4.5 V at a current density of 25 mA g-1. After 800 cycles, the discharge capacity is still 201.8 mA h g-1, well exceeding the one associated with the present-state high-voltage SIB. Furthermore, the effect of the porous structure of the α-Fe2O3 nanoceramics on sodium ion transport and cyclability is investigated. This reveals that α-Fe2O3 nanoceramics will be a remarkably promising low-cost and pollution-free high-voltage cathode candidate for high-voltage SIBs.@en

In recent years, many governments and companies have gradually launched robotaxi projects to help make transportation systems smarter, improve travel efficiency, and reduce travel costs. Robotaxi is a new mode of travel that replaces human driving with machines, freeing up social labour and enriching people’s travel choices. This study employs the Extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT2) to understand the influencing factors of users’ adoption and usage of robotaxis in China to facilitate the broader integration of robotaxis into urban transportation systems. This study surveyed the preferences of 2048 respondents and analysed the data through structural equation modelling. The results indicate that performance expectancy, hedonic motivation, and price value are the factors influencing users’ behavioural intentions, while effort expectancy and social influence affect use behaviour. In contrast, habit is an important factor that affect both behavioural intention and actual use behaviour. Based on the findings, we have proposed practical strategies to improve robotaxi services and updated the UTAUT2 model in the context of robotaxi. We suggest that robotaxi operators can promote user acceptance and use by reducing the difficulty of use, improving the cost performance and the ride experience, and making appropriate publicity and guidance.@en

Organic-inorganic halide perovskites (OIHPs) bring an unprecedented opportunity for radiation detection with their defecttolerance nature, large mobility-lifetime product, and simple crystal growth from solution. Here we report a dopant compensation in alloyed OIHP single crystals to overcome limitations of device noise and charge collection, enabling -ray spectrum collection at room temperature. CH3NH3PbBr3 and CH3NH3PbCl3 are found to be p-type and n-type doped, respectively, whereas dopant-compensated CH3NH3PbBr2.94Cl0.06 alloy has over tenfold improved bulk resistivity of 3.6×109 φcm. Alloying also increases the hole mobility to 560 cm2 V-1 s-1, yielding a high mobility-lifetime product of 1.8×10-2 cm2 V-1. The use of a guard ring electrode in the detector reduces the crystal surface leakage current and device dark current. A distinguishable 137Cs energy spectrum with comparable or better resolution than standard scintillator detectors is collected under a small electric field of 1.8Vmm-1 at room temperature.@en
