When the first free-floating carsharing operators launched their business, they did not know if it would be profitable. They often started in highly populated cities without performing extensive target group analysis, and were less concerned about fleet management. Usually, there are two main datasets that can be used to find areas that would have a high demand for free-floating carsharing: booking data, for measuring the actual demand; and land use and census data for describing the activities performed in different areas in a city. In this paper, we aim to use this information to help predict the demand of free-floating carsharing systems. We use booking data provided by Drive Now for Berlin in 2014 and contextual information about the type of activity each neighborhood has. Using Berlin as a case study, we apply a negative binomial statistical model to explain the number of bookings. From the results, we conclude that free-floating carsharing is predominantly successful in areas with more affluent citizens who are open to trying new and sustainable technologies. Other important determinants that result in a high number of carsharing bookings are the area's centrality and parking lot availability. The statistical model for Berlin was then transferred to Munich and Cologne, two other cities in Germany with similar population sizes. A comparison between the estimated demand categories and actual bookings shows satisfying results, but also non-negligible local conditions influencing the spatial demand for bookings.@en

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) can reduce traffic congestion and accidents. In dense traffic flow conditions and when changing lanes, drivers prefer to deactivate the ACC. These control transitions between automation and manual driving could impact driver behaviour characteristics. However, few studies have analysed the magnitude and duration of these adaptations. This research aims at quantifying the adaptations in speed, acceleration, distance headway and relative speed when drivers resume manual control. We collected driver behaviour data in an on-road experiment with full-range ACC during peak hours in Munich. We analysed these data using linear mixed-effects models to identify statistically significant changes in driver behaviour characteristics after drivers resumed manual control (transition period). The results reveal that the speed decreased significantly after the system was deactivated and it increased significantly after the system was overruled by pressing the gas pedal. These adaptations might have a substantial impact on traffic efficiency and safety.@en

The comparably low driving ranges of battery electric vehicles (BEV) cause time-consuming recharging stops if long distances have to be covered. Thus, navigation systems not only have to compute routes leading from the BEV's current position to the destination, but also to plan recharging stops. This type of routing problem is often modeled as a constrained shortest path problem. The constraint ensures that the BEV does not run out of energy. In this paper, a de facto deterministic reformulation of this problem type is suggested, which allows handling uncertainty-particularly the risks resulting from imperfect energy consumption predictions. For this purpose, a certain part of the battery capacity is used as an energy buffer. Different approaches to dynamically optimize the size of this energy buffer in dependency of the expected level of uncertainty are proposed and a corresponding modification of a typical routing algorithm is described. Furthermore, a simulation study is conducted showing that the described framework allows keeping the probability to run out of energy close to zero (for the test settings: < 0.5%) as long as a suitable approach for defining the size of the energy buffer is applied. @en

The interest in tradable mobility credits (TMC) is growing steadily. Compared to existing instruments, its cap-and-trade design for the demand side ensures that a limited quantity, e.g., traffic and related emissions, can by design not be exceeded. However, most TMC schemes are market-based financial instruments that can only be successful, if the market ensures the most efficient allocation of resources and if one can rely on the price. Hence, TMC schemes require trading activity and a liquid market that only emerges when participants are able and willing to trade. In this paper, we systematically review the TMC literature for aspects of trading activity and market liquidity, summarize the literature streams, and discuss determinants of participants’ ability and willingness to trade TMCs. During the literature review we separate those into demand-side, supply-side, and market regulation factors. This first coherent discussion of creating liquid TMC markets with substantial trading activity challenges the instrument and allows us to draw valuable conceptual implications for the TMC scheme design, but also implications for stakeholders beyond concept. Generating trading activity and liquid markets is thoroughly possible, but robustly achieving it can be challenging.@en
