TU-Delft Alternative Lelyline: A case study from Zwolle to Groningen

Master thesis (2023) - F. BAI, Adriaan Geuze, Aksel Ersoy
Long-term, large-scale empirical studies on the simultaneous development of transport infrastructure and the built environment are scarce. This thesis provides a future high-speed railway infrastructure implementation alternative based on the Dutch cultural landscape from Zwolle to Groningen. Our design goal is to better connect Amsterdam and provinces in the north of the Netherlands including Overijssel, Drenthe, Groningen by using a faster, more efficient and sustainable high-speed railway solution to replace the Lelyline solution proposed by the Dutch government based on traditional trains.

The author has systematically evaluated the advantages and disadvantages of various railway routing options, and based on this, proposed an optimal alignment. Then, the landscape typologies alongside the optimal alignment are concluded and the sustainable landscape interventions with the high-speed railway viaducts on those landscape typologies are elaborated into a catalogue, which will be not only meaningful for Zwolle-Groningen, but also will provide inspiration and guideline for future high-speed rail design projects in similar landscape context worldwide.
Afterwards, following the principles of sustainable development and theory of infrastructure as landscape, five unique sites along the optimal alignment are chosen to showcase the landscape architecture interventions in relationship with the rich Dutch cultural landscape. The outcome is a design proposal of the high-speed railway itinerary and landscape mitigation measures to its surroundings including both built and natural environment. ...

A landscape architectural design research on the implementation of an innovative railroad in the Dutch cultural landscape as a superior alternative to the Lelyline. A case-study between Amsterdam and Zwolle

Master thesis (2023) - J.F. ten Hove, A. Geuze, R.J. Dijkstra, P. de Jong
Promoting sustainable travel involves encouraging train travel as a preferred mode of transportation. However, train travel in the Netherlands faces challenges with delays and slow speeds, including the planned Lelyline. This report explores an innovative high-speed train viaduct inspired by Chinese rail construction techniques as an attractive alternative to the Lelyline. By adopting modular
construction and straight alignments, this research aims to create an efficient and
visually captivating transportation solution that respects the cultural landscape. The case study focuses on a straight trajectory across the Flevopolder between Amsterdam South and Zwolle. The viaduct integrates with the landscape, enhancing biodiversity through an ecological corridor in its shadow, benefiting agriculture and the nature network. Additionally, it offers panoramic views,
recreational value, and serves as a marker of historical significance.

This research showcases the potential of a sustainable train landscape that aligns with the Dutch cultural context, providing valuable insights for future transportation projects. ...
In Berlin, the public transportation system is large and varied. Train (S-Bahn), tram, metro (U-Bahn), and bus consist of the main skeleton of the system. However, due to historical reasons, most U-bahn and tram lines are located only in the former West and East Berlin, respectively. Thus, lots of transfer stations are located in the area where is adjacent to the Berlin Wall. The Berlin Municipality's Department of Transportation also initiated a program to renew these divided Berlin train stations in the 1990s. This project focuses on the Warsaw Street station which is ignored and still under poor architectural condition. It also aims to explore new design approaches based on the topic of way-finding. The facade, interior space, and outside area are supposed to be considered as a whole to realize the ambition. ...
