This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Ultrasonic-assisted drilling (UAD) of Glass laminate aluminium reinforced epoxy (GLARE) at high cutting speeds (Spindle speeds: 3000–7500 rpm; feed rates 300–750 mm/min) by analysing the thrust force and hole quality metrics (surface roughness, hole size, and burr formations. The research also presents numerical modelling of FMLs under conventional and UAD regimes to predict thrust force using ABAQUS/SIMULIA. The thrust force and exit burrs were reduced by up to 40.83 % and 80 %, respectively. The surface roughness metrics (Ra and Rz) were slightly higher using UAD but remained within the desirable limits of surface roughness for machined aeronautical structures. The discrepancy between the simulation and experimental results was adequate and did not exceed 15 %. The current study shows that it is feasible to drill holes in GLARE using higher cutting parameters and maintain excellent hole quality, which means increased productivity and reduced costs. ...

Cross-modal retrieval, as an important emerging foundational information retrieval task, benefits from recent advances in multimodal technologies. However, current cross-modal retrieval methods mainly focus on the interaction between textual information and 2D images, lacking research on 3D data, especially point clouds at scene level, despite the increasing role point clouds play in daily life. Therefore, in this paper, we proposed a cross-modal point cloud retrieval benchmark that focuses on using text or images to retrieve point clouds of indoor scenes. Given the high cost of obtaining point cloud compared to text and images, we first designed a pipeline to automatically generate a large number of indoor scenes and their corresponding scene graphs. Based on this pipeline, we collected a balanced dataset called CRISP, which contains 10K point cloud scenes along with their corresponding scene images and descriptions. We then used state-of-the-art models to design baseline methods on CRISP. Our experiments demonstrated that point cloud retrieval accuracy is much lower than cross-modal retrieval of 2D images, especially for textual queries. Furthermore, we proposed ModalBlender, a tri-modal framework which can greatly improve the Text-PointCloud retrieval performance. China has implemented main functional areas planning (MFAP) since 2010, which is essential for improving the efficiency of land space utilization and achieving sustainable urban development. Quantitative assessments of the urban development levels (UDLs) at the county level across China after the implementation of MFAP have not been well-documented. In this study, a unified indicator system was developed, and the UDLs of 2850 counties in China after MFAP implementation were evaluated. The results showed that MFAP played a positive role in urban development in China. The UDLs in China generally increased but showed obvious spatial differences. The higher UDLs were mostly found in the counties in the five urban belts, which reflects the overall urban layout of China. The UDLs were generally low in the western counties in comparison with those in the eastern part of China. The differences in the UDLs from east to west were greater than those from north to south. Moreover, the differences in the UDLs presented a spatial agglomeration effect. This study could offer insight into the refinement of MFAP in China and sustainable urban development in developing countries.

A tidal creek represents a typical morphologic unit in an intertidal flat. The development and migration of a tidal creek can affect the mass transport, ecological environment, and geomorphologic evolution of the flat. By using field observations, this study links hydrodynamics, sediment transport processes with short-term changes in topography at a typical tidal creek system located at the Chongming Island of the Yangtze River estuary. Hydrodynamic and sediment transport associated with varying tidal cycles across both wet (flood) and dry seasons were measured through the field campaign. The wet and dry seasons represent higher and lower discharges of Yangtze River, respectively. The results indicated that most of the suspended sediment becomes entrained at the beginning of a flood tide. At a fixed point, 7.2 times of suspended sediments, which were entrained out of the creek in wet season, began to be transported along the creek compared to dry season. In the dry season, high flow velocity and shear stress conditions occurred in the tidal creek because the water level was below the top of the flat. In summary, the tidal creeks were found to serve as effective conduits for the transportation of sediments in the wet season, and the secondary flow enhanced the development of tidal meandering. Seasonal variations in creek morphological changes were also continuously monitored over two years at intervals of two months. The change of creek morphology varied from the high level to low level, and tidal meandering was strongly associated with flood and ebb tides. ...

After a previous review of the grain-size characteristics of in situ (primary) fine-grained aeolian deposits, reworked (secondary) aeolian deposits, as modified in lacustrine environments and by alluvial and pedogenic processes, are discussed in this paper. As a reference, the grain-size characteristics of primary loess deposits are shortly described. Commonly, pedogenesis and weathering of primary loess may lead to clay neoformation and thus to an enrichment in grain diameters of 4–8 μm, a size which is comparable to the fine background loess. Remarkably, the modal grain-size values of primary loess are preserved after re-deposition in lakes and floodplains. But, secondary lacustrine settings show a very characteristic admixture with a clayey population of 1–2,5 μm diameter due to the process of settling in standing water. Similarly, alluvial settings show often an addition with coarse-grained sediment supplied by previously eroded sediment. However, floodplain settings show also often the presence of pools and other depressions which behave similarly to lacustrine environments. As a result, alluvial secondary loess sediments are characterized by the poorest grain-size sorting when compared with the other secondary loess and primary loess. Despite the characteristic texture of each of these deposits, grain-size characteristics of the described individual sediment categories are not always fully diagnostic and thus grain-size analysis should be complemented by other information, as sedimentary structures and fauna or flora, to reliably reconstruct the sedimentary processes and environments. ...

Textile Reinforced Mortars (TRMs) have found extensive attention for externally bonded reinforcement of masonry and historical structures. However, only few information is available regarding their mechanical properties and effectiveness in improving the seismic performance of strengthened structures. This paper presents an extensive numerical investigation on the effect of TRM composites on the nonlinear response and failure modes of masonry walls. The effect of boundary conditions and the TRM type on the performance of strengthened walls are critically discussed and presented. It is shown that the performance and failure mode of the walls can significantly change after strengthening, an important issue that should be considered at the design stage. Finally, the effect of TRM application on the nonlinear response of a large historical masonry façade in Macau is investigated and presented. ...
