Currently in our payment system, the usage of cash is declining and our card payments are dependent on American payment companies. For these reasons, the ECB is researching to issue a Digital Euro, a European payment system offered by a public institution, often explained as digital cash. I argue that instead of distinguishing itself on increased convenience or usability, Digital Euro rather provides indirect benefits, which have to align with people's values.

As a scope, this project investigates how to communicate the value of privacy in the Digital Euro during in-store payments. As an approach, first various tensions around (the perception of) privacy are mapped out, namely:

1. Do users want to access Digital Euro through a public or private party?
2. Do users want to pay fully anonymously or identify towards a trusted intermediary?
3. Do users want to have complete choice over which data to share or have a determined standard of information sharing?

Then, these tensions were translated into speculative prototypes used for research. These are meant to present dilemmas around privacy and let participants relfect on their values.
User research was conducted through in-depth interviews and and in-context evaluation to enact payments. The user research showed that:

1. Familiarity is deemed more important in selecting an intermediary than that party being public or private.
2. Few users are interested in cash-like anonymity, especially when this would increase the risk of losing money.
3. All users appreciate having the choice beforehand of which data to share with which parties.

Other insights are communicated in the form of a vocabulary on the way participants reasoned about their values, personas that reason based on long term values or direct benefits, and detailed insights per prototype page. Finally, design recommendations are given for communicating privacy.

This project focuses on improving computer keyboard interaction for people with Parkinson’s Disease (PD), specifically addressing the symptom of bradykinesia, which causes slowed movement and impairs fine motor skills. The objective is to explore the integration of cueing techniques—external stimuli such as auditory prompts, visual cues, and haptic feedback—to assist people with PD in initiating and executing movements more effectively.
Adopting a user-centered design approach and involving actual users throughout the research and testing phases, the project investigated various concepts to enhance the ergonomics and functionality of keyboards for people with Parkinson’s. Multiple prototypes were developed and tested through focus groups, providing valuable feedback that guided the refinement of the design.
The final design, called OnCue, features a modular system comprising an ergonomic keyboard specifically tailored to users’ needs, with integrated haptic feedback, visual cues, and haptic cuffs. A key feature of the design is its customizability, allowing the system to adapt to individual needs as symptoms fluctuate daily. The goal is to reduce frustration and improve the quality of life for people affected by Parkinson’s. This project demonstrates the potential of adaptive technologies to significantly enhance well-being and foster greater independence for users.

This project addresses the subject of integrating Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) into low-to-middle income healthcare contexts, with a specific focus on Nepal. CMMS play a prominent role in enabling Biomedical Equipment Technicians (BMETs) to monitor and optimize the performance of medical equipment (WHO, 2012), streamline operational processes, and facilitate intra-hospital communication and decision-making (Basiony, 2013). However, existing CMMS solutions designed for high-income environments, often fail to seamlessly integrate into the unique workflows and needs of low-to-middle income settings (Cohen et al., 2023).

The central problem identified in the Nepalese context is a misalignment between the workflow of BMETs and the CMMS interface. An overwhelming amount of information and functionalities within the system, making it challenging for the BMETs to identify tasks. Reinforced by, that the Nepalese context places less value on data creation and tend to operate more in accordance with tasks that can be observed physically.

To identify and address this problem, a comparative study was conducted between a Dutch hospital and two Nepalese hospitals. Data was gathered using the context-mapping method (Vissers et al., 2005), and a comprehensive understanding of the system’s interface was obtained through the streamlined cognitive walkthrough method (Spencer, 2000). The design goal was to create an inclusive interface for BMETs in Nepal through the visualization of medical device data. Norman and Draper’s design steps (1986) were used to generate an iterative approach for designing an CMMS interface. A mixed-method approach, including the System Usability Scale (Brooke, 1996), was used to evaluate the iterative prototypes and the final interface design.

The results of this study showed, by visualizing medical device data, a transition from a data-centric system to a task-oriented system. BMETs in Nepal confirmed through evaluation that the final design represents an improvement on the systems towards a task-oriented interface that aligns more with their daily workflow.

The project serves an inspiration for future designers to illustrate the importance of a human-centered approach when adapting software from one context to another. By highlighting the importance of considering the needs and workflows of a setting. Furthermore, this project can be a resource for companies and NGOs seeking to develop CMMS solutions from a human-centered perspective. In the Nepalese context, it provides building blocks for designing CMMS systems that better suit the work environment. In essence, this research represents a step towards a more inclusive CMMS system and the broader conversation on human-centered design in healthcare technology.

The objective of this project is to design a product or product-service combination to encourage agricultural entrepreneurs to make sustainable decisions based on their decision-making process. This assignment was set up in collaboration with LTO Noord and the DAW to find what is withholding farmers from implementing sustainable agricultural practices to improve their support for agricultural entrepreneurs.

To accomplish this objective, first, literature on farmers’ decision-making, entrepreneurship and design anthropology is reviewed. Next, qualitative research was conducted, where a focus group, probes, participatory observation and a semi-structured interview were used to examine the decision-making of young farmers. Results of the qualitative research, note the characteristics of the young agricultural entrepreneurs, their stance towards choices, their decision-making process of a conscious decision, and the experiences of being a young farmer in a partnership. The most striking results where found considering the experiences of a young farmer in a partnership with older generations. The young and older generations have to run the farm together, having different beliefs and standards. This difference is especially experienced when the younger generation proposes a change; they feel they need practical proof to convince the older generation about this change. The results were used to set criteria for the design and develop a design brief: The to-be-designed product or product-service combination should support young farmers to convince the older generation in the partnership to make a step towards implementing a sustainable practice.

During the project, a preliminary design is realised: SoilMate. SoilMate is a tool whereby farmers can experiment with new (sustainable) measures on their (digital) farm. SoilMate embodies itself as an interactive screen in the canteen or kitchen. It simulates the farmer’s farm and the possible results of changes.

Most people are familiar with play as entertainment in the form of toys and games for children, but the same cannot be said for play as a means to energise for adults. And taking breaks to refresh during work is not something that we are generally good at, as was reflected in the results of various interviews which can be found in this thesis.


Though there are many definitions of play floating about, Van Fleet & Feeney (2015) define play as an activity or behaviour built of three characteristics: (1) goal of amusement, (2) highly interactive and (3) immersive & absorbing.

These core elements are exactly what makes play so difficult to implement, though simultaneously so valuable to employees in a work environment, which in many ways reflects the opposite of such elements. For example, in a work environment one is expected to strive for efficiency and success, whereas play aims to amuse. This thesis focuses on the conflicts that arise when playful behaviour meets the office setting, which were identified through qualitative research activities. Results of these activities indicated that there are many motives that withhold employees from using break facilities such as a ping pong table when they are offered by the company. For example, some individuals expressed that they want to spend their time efficiently, and therefore did not have time to play with such facilities. Others felt that they want to take a break at their own convenience, and gathering tools and opponents to play with, would certainly take away from that convenience. These motives formed the basis for design criteria to be used for evaluation of the design during development and a scope, which was based on two core user dilemmas:

1) I want to be fully engaged in an activity but still be mindful of those around me;

2) I want to spend time with colleagues, but I don’t want them to see my shortcomings.

Through various iterations of ideating, prototyping and testing with users (including CREFM employees and StudioLab members), a final design was created to ultimately help energise office workers through playful breaks. This concept, aptly named Button Bash, consists of interactive, modular panels featuring buttons and light, as shown on the next page. In interaction with and appearance of the product, it adds a playful character to stiff surroundings, and helps users find opportunities to recharge through active play.

Extensive waiting times for youth Mental Healthcare have a significantly negative effect on youngsters well-being. The Ministry of Public Health, Welfare and Sport (Ministry of VWS) therefore commissioned Shoshin to research the cause of waiting times in order to address them. Shoshin is a social design agency that believes waiting times are not only the result of a shortage of staff, but also of inefficiencies and ineffective elements in the youth care system. They aim to make strategic interventions to create true system change (Haarlemmer et al.).

This thesis aims to support Shoshin in their mission to reduce waiting times for youngsters. Youngsters are defined as 16 till 23 year people in this report.

Specifically, the aim of this graduation project is to come up with a design that helps youngsters get more appropriate care. According to Van der Bijl-Brouwer (2021) systemic problems (such as problems in the mental youth care sytem) are interrelated and can therefore not be solved independently. Therefore reseach was conducted in various contexts regarding the youth Mental Healthcare system:

1) The organisation involved with decisions regarding the youth care system. (Macro context)


2) The process of getting into care. (Meso context)

3) The interaction between youngsters and their therapists. (Micro context)

These analyses showed that youngsters often feel unheard and are not included in decision making. Therapists rely too much on their own vision and focus too little on background/individual factors of the youngsters. This leads to missing the core of the youngsters mental problems, which contributes greatly to ineffective and inefficient care. The analyses also showed that youth Mental Healthcare (j-GGZ) therapists are the most promising target audience to design for. In fact, other therapists - such as district members or therapists of the child and family centre (CJG) - often do not have the skills to find the core of the youngsters’ mental problems as they are often not specialized enough.

Following these analyses, the design goal has been to empower youngsters in decision making during GGZ therapy. A “Mijn Hulplijn” app was developed that helps youngsters to actually give feedback and incorporate it into therapy. The app allows youngsters to think of their own needs and wants in therapy, and helps to actually incorporate this as well. Moreover, it provides background information that is relevant for the therapist in question. Furthermore, the app offers suggestions for alternative therapies and gives an overview of the youngsters’ healthcare history. This way, the app can improve the success of the therapy and the youngster-therapist interaction. To actually make and measure this impact, this study also provided a plan for implementation of the app.

For many people, experiencing intimacy and sexuality is an important aspect of the quality of life. People who are suffering from incurable cancer are no exception (Wang et al., 2018). Often patients encounter a shift from focus on diagnosis and treatment, to emphasis on psychosocial support when cancer treatment is no longer effective. When it comes to intimacy and sexuality, these topics are experienced as difficult to discuss for both patient and healthcare specialist. To improve the quality of life of patients with incurable cancer, the GPS project, which stands for Conversations About Psychosocial Needs, Intimacy and Sexuality (Gesprekken over Psychosociale behoeften, intimiteit en Seksualiteit) was founded by the Amsterdam UMC. Their goal is to help and support nurses and clinical nurse specialists (CNS) improve their knowledge and skills about signaling and discussing psycho-social needs, intimacy and sexuality with patients with incurable cancer by putting together a training program.This graduation project focuses on designing for the online learning environment the GPS project set up, to effectuate awareness among nurses and contribute to a better understanding of the patient’s needs and questions about intimacy and sexuality in this important phase of the end-of-life. The aim is to make the online learning environment the base of their training in order to develop conversation skills and be engaging, inspiring and effective. To achieve this goal, extensive research has been done on the needs of nurses and CNS. By using the method Context Mapping interviews are conducted which have led to uncovering their barriers and enablers towards discussing intimacy and sexuality with patients with incurable cancer. Supported by literature and multiple Co-creation sessions with stakeholders, this has led to a design for a preparatory exercise within the online learning environment which is called: “The sea of experiences”. In an empathetic way, the exercise encourages the participants to think about their own abilities when it comes to discussing this topic, complemented by showing different perspectives on barriers and enablers. An evaluation of the concept with the target group showed that the exercise helped them to have a better understanding of the patients’ needs, feel supported and have the right mindset by feeling inspired to go through the rest of the online learning environment. As a result of the evaluation, recommendations are formulated with regard to the form and content of the concept. After complying with the recommendations, the concept should be ready to be implemented in the online learning environment of the GPS project. To conclude, the concept is a valuable step towards improving communication about intimacy and sexuality between healthcare specialists and patients, and therefore contributes to improving the quality of life of patients with incurable cancer.

People with dementia often quit cooking early on in their illness because it is too complex, tiring, or frustrating. With mild dementia, people struggle with planning and figuring out the order of the cooking steps. Also, they find it challenging to stay focussed on the tasks at hand. Furthermore, their short-term memory causes them to struggle to remember instructions and which steps they have already done.
However, cooking has immense benefits, such as giving a person a sense of autonomy, respect, and purpose and helping bring people closer together. Furthermore, cooking trains cognitive and motoric skills, which allow people with dementia to retain their skills for as long as possible. Currently, there exist recipes designed for people with cognitive impairment, but they do not meet the needs and desires of each individual. In contrast, occupational therapists create individual step-by-step plans, but these require much time and insight. Therefore, this thesis aims to help guide people with mild dementia through a cooking activity at home or at dementia meeting centres in collaboration with other clients or caregivers in a scalable yet personalised way.
Through an iterative approach with extensive involvement of the target group, a new recipe format was developed that suits the needs of people with dementia. The paper recipes use visual elements combined with textual descriptions to optimise understanding and following the recipe. Users navigate through the steps using a pawn to remember which step they are working on, and others can keep track of their progress. Caregivers are best aware of the person with dementia’s instructional needs, cooking habits, and food preferences. Thus, our application Happje enables caregivers to write recipes themselves by writing the steps in a way that suits their client. Happje automatically adds corresponding icons, puts the steps in the correct layout, and helps with exporting or printing the recipe.
The recipe format was evaluated with the intended target group, context, and activity to see whether it helped achieve the design goal. Clients quickly understood the steps through the recipe’s visuals, layout, and step formulation. However, navigating through the steps was more challenging as clients forgot to move the pawn consistently. The collaborative cooking activity was greatly enjoyed by participants and well suited for both families at home and friends at meeting centres. Most (but not all) caregivers appeared capable and motivated to write the recipes.
We recommend improving the navigation of the recipe by redesigning the pawn and adding a digital recipe mode to Happje. We suggest further developing Happje and testing its usability with the target group. Further studies could evaluate how practicing with the recipes could improve following the recipes, collaboration, and trust between caregivers and PwDs.

Our society is built around a financial system that includes debt. It is a classic saying that anyone can end up in debt, but it is how we treat those with debt that defines their well-being. With the current financial system, we are prejudicing a part of society, making an already vulnerable group even more prone to debt.

We have designed systems which are almost impossible for these people to navigate, making vulnerable groups overrepresented in private debt. These vulnerable groups are made out of intellectually disabled, illiterates, multi-lingualists and financially stressed people. The goal of this thesis is to lift the barriers drawn up in private debt, and to introduce an inclusive approach to debt collection for collector coeo incasso.

During the analysis I will explore the private debt system as implemented by law. The debt trajectory is complex - privacy and new regulations make interventions difficult - leaving little design space.

The typical debtor and the implications of debt on human well-being are perhaps even worse. We can find vulnerable groups making up more than half of debtors.

These vulnerable groups then have to deal with the implications of debt, symptoms such as chronic stress and shame are common. This can even go as far as suicide. The effect of debt goes far beyond the wallet, it impacts every aspect of life.

When looking at the current debt trajectory ats coeo incasso we see that there is room for improvements which may drastically reduce barriers for debtors. By slightly altering the current layout of a debt trajectory we can help debtors have a more stress free debt experience.

The proposed interventions, on a service and interaction level, have to goal of lowering those barriers by making debtors feel acknowledged in their skills.

By lowering these barriers we can now expect debtors to live a more stress free life. These practices will help anyone, not only vulnerable groups. By introducing these interventions we can expect coeo to fully align with their goal of being the most empathic debt collector again.

Through these principles the debt trajectory can now be improved. New methods of communications, such as interpersonal communication, are introduced. New colalborations with municipal financial advisors are set up.

But also the existing communication is redesigned. New letters in understandable language will be sent. Digital communication now includes important accessibility principles. By implementing these kind of design choices coeo can now offer a debt trajectory with lower barriers.

Bever is an outdoor chain store located in the Netherlands. Besides the Bever stores, Bever.nl was introduced in 2011, continuously growing to an extensive webshop enabling users to shop and explore online. Going to the Bever stores results in experienced staff supporting (novice) users with finding the right equipment for their activity. However, online this process is different. A user is designated to a webstore with (written) information about products. Moreover, details to express product features and performance of products can be found on a product detail page (PDP). The goal of this research is to ensure the right product in online searches at Bever.nl. Thus, the main design challenge is: “How to explain product benefits of outdoor jackets to novice users in order for them to make a more informed decision?”.

Discovered Insights
The novice Bever user can best be described as a user who needs much guidance in the selection process because of his low level of product knowledge and context about the activity. When a novice user is in need of a product for a specific activity he enters the web store with this specific activity and product group in mind. When little or no activity related content is shown, it is unclear to a user if a product matches his specific activity since the novice user has little or no prior knowledge or experience with the specific activity and the needed product. When a novice user is searching for his specific product, communication in familiar terminology is of great importance for making an informed and considered decision. Users need to understand the questions (filters), options and product differences in order to do so. Product features do not support the novice user in understanding a product. Therefore, product benefits are of great importance because they show the value a user will gain from a product. Subsequently this results in users understanding a product by understanding the values of the different features because they interpret what the product will mean for them.

Design Criteria
An interaction vision is created to improve the current online shopping experience of a novice user at Bever.nl. This vision focuses on the improvement of three feelings a user experiences when finding the perfect jacket: feeling in control, feeling confident and feeling surprised. This will support the user in a more goal-oriented search with control over the end result, while reading understandable and activity related information without feeling bored due to lots of non-visual long paragraphs of information. Besides the interaction vision several design requirements have been set up related to understandable explanation, activity information, visual presentation and faster exploration.

Concept
The final concept, Bever’s Jassen Kompas, is a decision support that ensures the right product in online searches at Bever.nl. It focuses on the visual aspect of the activity of the user (within his specific context) by answering understandable activity and context related questions. Subsequently a selection of the three best and good choices are presented to the user in order to guide the decision making.

Recommendations
Further studies could evaluate the real case usage of the Bever’s Jassen Kompas with a buying intention of users compared to fictional testing. The second recommendation would be to validate and discuss, together with experts, the questions asked in Bever’s Jassen Kompas. At last, further development and testing of the usability, back-end and mobile design of the Bever’s Jassen Kompas can be explored.

ADHD has long been thought of as a children's disorder, that you grow out of during puberty. Now we know that this is not the case: 72% of children with ADHD still have it as adults, meaning that an estimated 2.1% of adults in the Netherlands have some form of ADHD. This means that these people still have symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and/or impulsivity at a later age. Besides that, self-regulation can be difficult, among other so-called 'executive functioning' skills. This can lead to difficulty focusing and finishing tasks, through procrastination and distraction. This project focuses on just that: how adults with ADHD be helped to focus and get things done, through design. At the start of this project, all adults with ADHD in the scope of the project, which is narrowed down this to students in the second phase of ideation. As a graduation project in the master Design for Interaction, this project draws from Human- Centered Design. The perspectives and needs of the people involved are explored through design research methods, such as generative research. The project then focuses on procrastination as its intervention point, as nearly all students with ADHD experience this, and for them a good or bad start of a study session can determine whether something gets done that day at all. It was found that one of the most consistent ways to motivate people with ADHD to start and keep studying is a study buddy. The rest of the project explores how to make finding new study buddies as low-threshold as possible. The result of this project is a concept called ConnectMe, an online study platform that promises to instantly match a student with ADHD to another student with ADHD, with the click of a button. ConnectMe mediates the study session with a stranger by offering an ice breaker, and guiding the two study partners through setting a study schedule for the day. The platform helps sticking to the set study periods (bursts) and breaks, and evaluating the study day. ConnectMe allows students with ADHD to send buddy requests if their study session was a success, invite outside friends to the platform to study together, and so build out their personal study community. The concept is evaluated with students with ADHD by way of a walkthrough of an online prototype. The students were positive about the design, expecting it to do a good job of helping them deal with procrastination, distractions, and creating a working atmosphere. Overall, it is well-designed, and students especially liked the time planner system.

Our relationship with money is a complicated one. Whatever your stance is, it is clear we all need money, whether we like it or not. It allows us to buy our basic necessities to survive. Food, heating, a roof over our heads. Next, it also allows us to thrive, by enabling us to buy things and experiences to help us develop as individuals. So, if we need money, why not try to get more than the minimum, so we can actually thrive? Take good care of ourselves and our loved ones? This thesis, set out to help achieve that. To help and enable more people to set themselves up for a life of less worries and more financial security and thus freedom.
Young adults reach a phase in life where they start earning a proper income, often quite a hike compared to living off their parents or as a student. The question that arrives en masse then, is what to do with that extra income. It is easy to also start spending more, but that’s not always the wisest decision. Many turn to their savings accounts, but with interest rates close to 0 and inflation devaluing your money’s
worth, parking it all at the bank is not the smartest move either.
After building up a safety net of cash, investing should be brought into the equation, to help young adults build wealth and take care of themselves, today and in the future. People seem to realize the necessity of investing more and more, as seen by the latest increase in the amount of retail investors, both here in The Netherlands (17% increase in 2020 as reported by Centraal Beheer, 2021) as internationally: 15% of the current investors started in 2020 said CNBC (Fitzgerald, 2021)
The problem here is that many retail investors invest in a risky way. 44% of new investors said they were trading short-term in 2020. 2021 then has seen the rise of many ‘meme-stocks’ such as Gamestop (GME), AMC, BB and many others, where retail investors just “yolo” into buying them, regardless of any fundamentals. Incentivized by the massive gains they see others post, as well as peer pressure, newbie investors massively pile into bets (it is called Wall Street Bets for a reason), treating the stock market like a casino.
On the other side, we see individuals who are scared away from investing even more, because the situation described above confirms their biased opinion that investing is very risky and dangerous. It is clear that both groups need to be taught how to invest the right way: long term, diversified and slowly. Investing a little bit each month (Dollar Cost Averaging). This method may be the most boring, but it also the most successful.
Furthermore, investing and finances in general have a lot to do with psychology. How can you resist the Fear Of Missing Out, the ups and downs of the stock market and stick to your plan? Research made clear that a mindset should be taught to young investors.
Many of the users surveyed stated they were ready to start investing, but didn’t because of a lack of knowledge (34%), not knowing how to start (21%), thinking it was too risky/scary (17%) or thinking it was too complex (15%). The existing solutions, such as YouTube videos, Podcasts and books didn’t take these issues away, as became clear in the user interviews and the context research.
After the research phase was done, a precise User Journey was created, pinpointing the issues people phase when trying to get started with investing. The following conclusion was drawn: users want to get more knowledge on the subject of investing, from a source they trust and offered to them in a gradual, guided manner, with their starting knowledge in mind. People often feel overwhelmed and lost.
After the phase ‘from research to design’, the report follows with the design solution: MoneyMinds. An online platform on financial education that is mindset-focused, gives fundamental knowledge and gives people the confidence to be independent. Through video courses, exercises, personal coaching and a helpful community, MoneyMinds aims to empower young adults to take control of their financial lives, to learn about and start investing the right way, with the right mindset.
The report finishes with a strategic part, that describes how MoneyMinds can be realized: the value proposition, the business model and a full brand manual, allowing for a consistent online presence and matching the audience.
All things considered, this Master thesis offers interesting insight into a relevant problem of today, with a clear path forward. I hope you enjoy reading it.

Money is a worry for many people, and one of the main factor to create well-being in society. Nowadays, 44% of young adults, say that money is their main reason for suffering from stress (Pew Research Center, 2020). Most of the young adults (62%) don't feel financially stable and about two-thirds state that they are living short on money, from pay-day to pay-day (CNBC, 2019). They usually have student debt, a harder time getting a mortgage and a permanent contract and on average fewer earnings than previous generations.

The problem of money and young adults is very common and could be scalable all over the world. In this project, the target group and the context were based on The Netherlands, due to the changing-situation nowadays of higher levels of debt, lower levels of income and difficulties to buy a get a mortgage, buy a house, or get a permanent contract (Nibud, 2019).

Research shows that the correlation with the money that these people are earning is very little. It’s not a problem of income in most of the cases, but a problem of behaviour. The behavioural model of Fogg (Fogg, 2009) explains that new behaviour is developed when people feel motivated up to a certain degree and take action to include that certain behaviour in their everyday life. I wanted to provide young adults with a solution that combined motivation, triggers and ability. A lack of motivation and trust in financial services and of tools to create better money behaviour with a focus on the long-term goals for millennials was found.

This graduation project has the goal of helping young adults with low financial capabilities that are in the contemplation stage (Prochaska 1979; Prochaska and DiClemente 1983) to change their current financial behaviour for one that improves their financial health in the future by offering tailored solutions.

The whole project followed a double-diamond process (TU Delft, 2019) and was performed following a user-centred design and strategic design approach. For this project Research consisted of user and context research. Including activities like literature analysis, user and expert interviews, online surveys, benchmark analysis of competitors, creative sessions and desk analysis. These activities were useful to understand the Target group on a deeper level. The research phase studied the young adult's ambitions, problems, goals, values and needs about finances, as well as their behavioural, financial, demographical and cultural context. The user research insights combined with the contextual research insights were analysed and combined with a result of a problem definition and a design direction.

The design direction looked into the use of Artificial Intelligence and social features to support people to create better money behaviour. The design direction was framed together with the design goal and vision. As a design vision, the financial journey was compared to a car journey and the solution of a navigation app indicated inspiring qualities and affordances to use as a starting point in the new phase of the project: ideation. The ideation phase consisted of a creative session, a definition of the key experiences and a creation of several concepts that after being tested and iterated in different levels of fidelity, lead to the final design.

Finally, the report finishes with a definition of the final concept: SARA.AI, that supports young adults to become financially free by offering user-tailored solutions. SARA is a user-centred financial robot-advisor that is personalised and always available for the user, giving real-time information of the financial situation, and focused on improving the financial behaviour of the people. It’s about substituting the experience of having a financial advisor by a service which is user-centred designed, accessible, and smarter. SARA helps people by the use of three core experiences: Setting either spending limits or saving goals every month for the users, visualising the daily/monthly progress on a roadmap showing the future financial goals and the estimated time of arrival and using the power of social rewards and achievements to motivate users to keep improving.

SARA.AI means financial freedom. It is about giving the users the power to live the life that they want. To choose their goals, the way to reach them, and to take control of their lives. Not only for people with knowledge in finances but for everyone.

The use of 3D printing technology in manufacturing environments has experienced rapid growth. Manufacturers have realised the potential of the technology. 3D printing enables the reduction of costs and lead-times of parts, components and tools used in production processes. Adoption of this technology is facing various challenges. A major challenge is the identification of suitable parts for Additive Manufacturing technology. Assessing a part’s suitability for 3D printing requires a substantial amount of knowledge of 3D printing technology. Within manufacturing and production environments, a limited group of people is trained to do understand the technology. It is expected that the frequency and quality of applications will increase the value that will be added by 3D printing. This development will be driven by the capability to identify new applications. The more stakeholders are educated in this field and understand the technology, the more opportunities will be identified. Given the above, this objective of this research project is to investigate how production line operators can be more actively involved in the initial stages of the 3D printing workflow. Through extensive literature and contextual research, the potential to enable production line operators to identify parts and problems in their section of the facility has been exposed. Various influential opportunities and challenges in their participation have been established. After a round of internal validation of the research insights, a strategic decision was made to focus design efforts on developing a digital platform. The objective of this platform is to enable operators to participate in the relevant steps of the 3D printing workflow. Through an iterative process, an Application Portal has been designed. This portal is a mobile application that supports production line operators in submitting new ideas. In addition to the above, the system offers the following functions:

3.Validation of application suitability A prototype is developed in Axure. This software is used to validate the concepts with a variety of manufacturing clients, operators and 3D print experts. The applicability of the concept has been validated for a majority of clients. These results illustrate that the solution offers significant value to achieve active participation. Additional design goals have been achieved to a great extent. The application portal provides operators with a tool to express their ideas. They can actively participate in innovation and take ownership of the applications they have identified themselves. Additionally, the platform offers Ultimaker and its manufacturing clients an opportunity to gather relevant data to work towards a future of automated part identification. Inevitably, the prototype has its limitations. However, this study represents a step forward in the acceleration towards accessible part identification by novice users in manufacturing environments.

This research explores the music making practices of musicians in a band, uncovering their needs to carry out successful collaborations. This work focuses on three key areas: the creative activities of music making, the dynamics of collaboration, and the tools used to support these.

This research unravels the complexity of the workflows of musicians, which lie amidst their individual musical expression, the constant exchange of their ideas, and the evolution of their personal relationships, with the goal of contributing to a shared musical piece. Additionally, currently used music making apps do not facilitate collaborative activities, making musicians seek alternative file sharing and communication tools to fulfill their needs online. This blocks their creative flow and slows down the band’s progress, particularly in the context of remote collaborations.

In a bid to address these issues and improve their collaboration, a solution was designed: Syntonize is a simple music making app concept that enables musicians in a band to easily collaborate on their early music making activities. They can create music teams with their bandmates, as well as shared music projects where they can easily record and combine their ideas. They can also communicate about their music, whether it is for precise feedback on their work, or general project management.

The aim of this thesis is to implement knowledge of a user's experience into vehicle design. Picnic is developing a new delivery vehicle and this project will explore what could be improved on the current ePV for the ePV2. The target user, the Picnic Runner is researched thoroughly to find where the ePV design lacks positive user experience. Problems around the current vehicle were assessed within the research stage with consideration of known foreseen problems with the new design. The Runner’s perception of safety was a found issue and a design was a concept created to help them work safer. This project is concluded with a design proposal that is grounded via research and tested prototypes.

In Bangladeshi rural areas, the groundwater may get contaminated with chemical contaminants. Aiming at removing chemical contaminants, piped water supply(PWS) systems were built. However, due to insufficient water quality tests, a lack of households' participation with the monitoring and maintenance of the PWS system, together with a lack of an efficient monitoring model and maintenance system, the PWS systems may fail to provide safe drinking water to the households, and households lose their trust with the water from the PWS system. To provide proper monitoring and maintenance to the PWS system, the DELTAP project and the TAPP-BDP project decided to use water quality field tests and a smartphone application to enable regular water quality tests to monitor the water quality of the PWS system. The TAPP could also engage the local households in the monitoring of their drinking water. The TAPP operator application has been designed based on the analysis of the current strip test and the AKVO technology, which could help to improve the accuracy of the strip test by reading strip test results. The TAPP operator application could help the local PWS system operators to do water quality strip tests and give a reliable indication of the water quality to monitor the PWS system. After researching the households' communication needs and smartphone usage, the TAPP customer application is designed to enable the households to participate in the monitoring and maintenance of the PWS system by requesting water quality tests and receiving water quality test results. After having the water quality test methods and TAPP application, a monitoring model and maintenance system are created to guide the stakeholders to monitor and maintain the PWS system. The design will contribute to monitoring and maintaining the PWS system in Bangladesh, restoring the households' trust in the PWS system, and assisting the PWS system to provide safe drinking water to the Bangladeshi households.

WIFI is everywhere, from cafes to bus stops, trains to airports, it’s a service that people consider as necessity. Ten years ago, air space was the only WiFi-wasteland. Nowadays, it’s safe to say that WiFi on planes is very common now. AirFrance-KLM also implements the WIFI service on the plane. It creates a new customer touchpoint within the customer journey — the Onboard Portal. Passengers use this website to connect the WIFI with their own devices on the plane. The goal of the project is to explore the possibilities of improving customer experience via this touchpoint by providing possible ancillaries (commission-based products /services, travel-related information, etc.). This project proposes a new conceptual OBP including a set of ancillaries based on passengers’ personalities (big five personality model, Goldberg, 1990). The concept enables the target group to arrange their trips better with immediate transportation guidance or long-term travel plan. As Figure 1 shows, the project started with analyzing the brand value/business strategy of KLM. The result showed KLM wants to provide a memorable experience to its customers and enhance customer intimacy. Personalization and customization is the current focus, since they are good methods of enhancing customer intimacy. Then, an investigation of current OBP and its competitors were conducted. It shows the current OBP only provide limited ancillaries, and do not recognize the passenger. The usage rate of KLM’s OBP is low. By analyzing the previous market research results, the in-flight and post-flight experience of travelers with business and personal purpose ware chosen as a starting point to explore how to provide personalized services and enhance user experience. Multiple research methods including contextmapping, interview and online questionnaire survey were used to create their customer profiles and passenger journeys. Based on previous research results, eight intervention opportunities were identified as potential areas to create design interventions. Due to the constraints of time and access to the business travelers, the target group was narrowed down to the tourists. The theory of the big five model and personality traits was introduced for personalized services. Then, literature review and statements analysis were conducted to explore passengers’ needs, concerns, and expectations with different personalities. The results were using to generate primary concepts in creative sessions. All these concepts were tested to gain more insights. Meanwhile, a brainstorm session and an online questionnaire survey were conducted to discover more ancillaries. After comparing all results, one concept was chosen to continue as the final design direction, and the profiles of the target group based on the chosen personality trait(conscientiousness) were created. Accordingly, the final concept was developed after some iterations (concept evaluation with coaches and customers). In the last phase, the design concept was evaluated with customers and experts from KLM to get critical feedback and suggestions, from customer’s and company’s perspective. The recommendations and limitations were discussed as well in the end.

Nowadays, growing up is quite different from what it was before. Around the globe the larger part of children engage in inordinate time looking at screens (Bucksch et al., 2016). The smartphone enables children to have more screen time, leading to negative consequences. Nevertheless, children still prefer this type of entertainment due to the entertainment values they get from the use.
This thesis examines how a loyalty campaign can intervene with a negative consequence of mobile screen use while utilizing the positive entertainment elements amongst children aged from six till twelve years.

Fourteen problems of smartphone usage accompanied with their consequences are found by literature research. These problems are presented to parents to gauge their opinion on this objective data, forming a first design goal: “Design a playful loyalty campaign that stimulate the engagement of children in active play by utilizing the entertainment values of a smartphone, to spark ones creativity.” Interviews with children accompanied with their parents examines more details on the first design goal. What boundaries need to be set with regard to the context? Which entertainment values of digital play are important to children? What is the influence of the touchscreens’ low threshold usage on active play? And finally; What is the influence on a child’s creativity? As a conclusion to this research, a new design goal is formulated: “The tactilization and experience of digital entertainment. In order to bring a connection between digital and ‘real world’ concepts and make them accessible to children.” The following criteria to this goal form the basis of evaluation for the concepts:

The result, called “Body Builders”, is a concept in which children learn about nutrients that come from food. 20 3D characters standing for nutrients can be collected. Together with the application, these characters will come alive and the child will experience what these, previously unknown nutrients, do to your body. User test shows, that the concept brings an intertwined combination between digital gaming and tangible play. In contrast to current mobile screen use, this concept balances between real and digital play by utilizing the play experiences children like.

This project began with an interest in the productivity of the individual. How does the definition of productivity change when altering the perspective from a team to the individual? The context of this project is very intentionally limited to the individual workplace of an employee. The opportunities of an understanding of individual working techniques and personal strategies that employees develop to cope with mood changes throughout their working day can offer great insights and possibilities to guide and help the individual in accomplishing their personal work goals. The shift of perspective from designing for an entire working environment to the focus of individual productivity is one of the goals in this graduation project.
