Protecting qubits from noise is essential for building reliable quantum computers. Topological qubits offer a route to this goal by encoding quantum information non-locally, using pairs of Majorana zero modes. These modes form a shared fermionic state whose occupation—either even or odd—defines the fermionic parity that encodes the qubit¹. Notably, this parity can only be accessed by a measurement that couples two Majoranas to each other. A promising platform for realizing such qubits is the Kitaev chain¹, implemented in quantum dots coupled using superconductors². Even the minimal two-site chain hosts a pair of Majorana modes, often called ‘poor man’s Majoranas’, which are spatially separated but offer limited protection compared with longer chains^{3, 4–5}. Here we introduce a measurement technique that reads out their parity through quantum capacitance. Our method couples two Majoranas and resolves their parity in real time, visible as random telegraph switching with lifetimes exceeding a millisecond. Simultaneous charge sensing confirms that the two parity states are charge neutral and remain indistinguishable to a probe that does not couple the modes. These results establish the essential readout step for time-domain control of Majorana qubits, resolving a long-standing experimental challenge.

Few-site implementations of the Kitaev chain offer a minimal platform to study the emergence and stability of Majorana bound states. Here, we realize two- and three-site chains in semiconducting quantum dots coupled via superconductors, and tune them to the sweet spot where zero-energy Majorana modes appear at the chain ends. We demonstrate control of the superconducting phase through both magnetic field and sweet-spot selection, and fully characterize the excitation spectrum under local and global perturbations. All spectral features are identified using the ideal Kitaev chain model. To assess Majorana localization, we couple the system to an additional quantum dot. The absence of energy splitting at the sweet spot is compatible with high-quality Majorana modes, despite the modest chain size.

We study a phase-tunable four-terminal Josephson junction formed in an InSbAs two-dimensional electron gas proximitized by aluminum. By embedding the two pairs of junction terminals in asymmetric DC superconducting quantum-interference devices (SQUIDs) we can control the superconducting phase difference across each pair, thereby gaining information about their current-phase relation. Using a current-bias line to locally control the magnetic flux through one SQUID, we measure a nonlocal Josephson effect, whereby the current-phase relation across two terminals in the junction is strongly dependent on the superconducting phase difference across two completely different terminals. In particular, each pair behaves as a φ0 junction with a phase offset tuned by the phase difference across the other junction terminals. Lastly, we demonstrate that the behavior of an array of two-terminal junctions replicates most features of the current-phase relation of different multiterminal junctions. This highlights that these signatures alone are not sufficient evidence of true multiterminal Josephson effects arising from hybridization of Andreev bound states in the junction.
