This thesis explores how future mobility in the Grand Paris region can be designed not only as an infrastructural solution, but as a meaningful and adaptive part of people’s daily lives. Conducted in collaboration with Mobilize—Renault Group’s urban mobility brand—and Delft University of Technology, the project applies the Vision in Product Design (ViP) methodology, complemented by systems thinking and biomimicry. The aim is to develop a strategic design vision and concept that responds to societal transitions, climate goals, and evolving human needs in one of Europe’s most complex metropolitan environments.

The Grand Paris region is undergoing major transformations, including the Grand Paris Express, stricter climate policies, and increasing urban density. Yet systemic barriers persist: suburban car dependency, social inequalities, and cognitive overload challenge the realisation of a more inclusive and sustainable mobility system. In this context, the core question becomes: how can Mobilize shape (sub)urban mobility ecosystems by 2040 in ways that align with emerging societal and experiential needs?

The research adopts a phased approach. First, it defines the design domain through the deconstruction of the current product–context relationship. Next, 199 interdisciplinary context factors were collected and clustered into twelve “emerging conditions”—narratives of probable societal change. These were structured into a framework of twelve “future states of mind,” combining two dimensions: human drivers of mobility decisions and perceptions of freedom. These states reflect how people may relate to mobility in 2040, not as users of a system, but as social, emotional, and cognitive actors.

The project then narrows its focus to one key worldview: the Resonating state. This mindset envisions people aligning their movement with collective rhythms—seeking not just autonomy, but awareness, timing, and shared flow. To translate this into a design response, the concept FLO was developed: a Product–Service–System that enables orchestrated micro-mobility “waves” across the metropolitan area. Through sync points, shared cues, and layered user feedback, FLO helps individuals move in sync with others, enhancing energy efficiency, psychological clarity, and social resonance.

The thesis delivers three core outcomes. First, a future-facing framework that supports strategic design explorations beyond infrastructure or technology. Second, a gap analysis revealing misalignments between current regional ambitions and lived mobility experiences. Third, a detailed concept—FLO—with user journeys, stakeholder roles, and a development roadmap aligned with Grand Paris 2040 goals.

Ultimately, the project shifts the perspective on mobility from movement alone to meaningful movement. It proposes a human-centric, systemic approach to mobility design that can inform Mobilize’s strategic direction, while offering broader insights for other cities navigating similar transitions.

This thesis explores the development of a future framework designed to address the complex and multifaceted issue of homelessness in The Hague. The future framework aimed at creating sustainable, user-centered services. With homelessness on the rise due to factors such as migration, economic instability, and housing shortages, there is an urgent need for innovative, forward-thinking solutions. This research was conducted in collaboration with the D&K advisory team of the Municipality of The Hague, focusing on the reframing of current approaches to create a more comprehensive and effective service design for those at risk of homelessness.

The methodology employed includes the Reframing Method, a design approach that encourages stepping back from conventional perspectives to explore new possibilities. The research involved extensive interviews with experts, observations, and literature reviews, which were synthesized into a future framework that anticipates the needs and challenges of the homeless population in 2035. This framework serves as the foundation for designing services that are not only reactive but also proactive, aiming to prevent homelessness before it occurs. The framework organized the information and resulted in the development of a service design called FliptheScript. The design specifically addresses one of the coping mechanisms identified in the framework. This service aims at early prevention of homelessness by focusing on people who stagnate because of shame, caused by financial issues.

The service design, FliptheScript, was subjected to user testing, which provided positive evidence of its effectiveness in improving the personal narrative of the test subject. The tests revealed that the design successfully engaged users and addressed key challenges identified in the research.

The outcomes suggest that a forward-looking, framework-based approach can significantly enhance the delivery of municipal services, making them more adaptable and responsive to the needs of vulnerable populations. The project demonstrates that integrating such a framework into the design process can lead to more effective interventions, which can be crucial in preventing and addressing homelessness. The findings suggest that by adopting a long-term perspective and focusing on the broader social context, municipalities can create more effective, user-centred services that address the root causes of homelessness. The project concludes with recommendations for further development and an assessment of the overall process, providing valuable insights for future research and design in this critical area.

The automotive industry is undergoing a transformation fueled by advancements in digital technologies and connectivity. As vehicles evolve, the way we interact with them is changing, driven by a new era of Human Machine Interface (HMI) design, and the introduction of autonomous driving. Designing a car is no longer just about the vehicle. It is about energy, data, services, connectivity, entertainment, and the relation between them. This project addresses these changing dynamics, and aims at developing a design proposal for the future of the in-car interaction within a 2035 Chinese urban context, for the Swedish-Chinese Lynk & Co Design.

This graduation project takes place in Kampala, Uganda, in collaboration with Design without Borders Africa (Dwb).

The aim of the project is threefold:
Create social impact in the domain of value exchange in the public space of Kampala,
Apply the Vision in Product design (ViP) method for the first time in the designer’s career and
Evaluate the responsibility of the designer in relation to a cross-cultural design project.

After establishing the ViP domain as ‘value exchange in the public space’ and performing two deconstructions (one by the designer and one by Dwb) extensive research is performed.
It focuses on a time 10 years ahead (2034) and collects 215 factors (statements about the domain): 161 from literature, and 54 from interviews with 35 vendors in Kampala. The factors are clustered into 16 driving forces of the future context.

With the driving forces a framework is constructed of 12 cells, the directions the future context can move into. The axes of the framework reveal the root of the problems around street vending.

(1*) the organization of public space: Kampala’s public space receives meaning from many, misaligned origins. Government planning is not consistent with the use of space.
(*2) socio-economic uncertainty: the sheer numbers of people combined with a lack of jobs creates uncertainty to which people react in different ways. These reactions create their motive to participate in value exchange.

3 cells are chosen to formulate a vision statement. We want to decrease discrimination, provide stability for hustlers and steer investments to where they are needed. Three goals which correspond to the main stakeholders: vendors, clients and the local authority (KCCA). The lost in translation between them must be addressed to enable any social transformation. Integration of vendors must become the goal rather than expulsion. To achieve this we want to reveal the value of value exchange: showing vendors’ contribution in terms of convenience, urban life and economic potential.

With individual and group ideation the concept is developed. It consists of a stall and street design assigning space to vendors in pedestrian zones. Vendors are given fixed categories, streets are replanned and vendors are made the guardians and cleaners of the street. Placement of spots is used to regulate traffic flow and decongest the city. The concept couples this reorganization of public space to the other axis of socio-economic insecurity, by turning street vending from a last resort into a first step up the formal ladder. Vendors can only rent a stall for six months during which they are educated, build a network and are helped in saving money – after the 6 months they are ready to start a full business. The financial and organizational aspects of the concept are also thought out.

Elaborate testing is performed with vendors and authorities. Most of the feedback is worked into the concept. Recommendations for further development include directions for stall design and a road map for taking the concept to a pilot level.

The reflection results in 6 design principles guiding western designers doing projects in radically different contexts.

We have an increasingly unsettled relationship with home (Lauzon, 2017) our environment is changing, affecting the places we live, technology allows us to move more and more into our homes, artificially creating the world outside (Urry, 2002), and essentially we are the most lonely we have ever been (DAZED & SPACE10,2022). This exclusivity of the home is contrasted by an emptying of public space, in short, we lack a proper balance between public and private life.

This is one of the sixteen directions, described in this thesis that defines a possible future of home, conditioning us in our understanding and experience of home. Through proposing 3 concepts, inviting people to think about how to balance between public and private and opening up possibilities for different interactions in public space, I attempt to restore the balance between public and private. The three concepts, Noise Collecting Culture, Namebag, and The Mirroring ublic react to current behaviour and create possibilities for different behaviour, being more public and enjoying the possibilities public space has to offer.

The sixteen home conditions are an outcome of the exploration of the future of home through use of the ViP method (Hekkert & van Dijk, 2011). 236 context factors, stable and changing building blocks of the future context, create a framework from which these 16 home conditions emerged. All these sixteen future directions open up a possibility for intervening and designing.

To make a just decision about how to intervene, the ViP method relies heavily on the values of the designer. As a means to find a compass in relying on these values different experiments with the method are created and tested. These experiments try to integrate other perspectives in the design process. The experiments resulted in additions to the ViP method. The first involves the activity of stating one’s preconceptions before engaging in a certain domain, so that designers can be aware of their biases and try to look for other perspectives during their process. The second is the activity of defending the mission statement, the design goal and vision the design has for the future. Through incorporating other entities in this defence: Gaia, The Other and The Things, the effects of the desired proposition are evaluated.

Mental health among young adults is in sharp decline, with over 68% of young adults in Europe reporting signs of burnout in the past year (Strava, 2021). This increasing prevalence of mental health problems among young adults, including burnout, anxiety, depression and feelings of hopelessness, has been exacerbated by factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change and societal pressures. Despite increased awareness, reduced stigma and efforts to improve mental health, the number of diagnoses appears to be increasing. The demand for professional mental health care is outstripping the capacity of institutions to provide it, making it difficult to access professional care in a timely manner and leading to an increasing reliance on biochemical solutions for symptom relief rather than psychotherapy. This sudden increase in mental health diagnoses among young adults cannot be attributed to changes in genetics, as genes don't change in a population over such a short period of time. If we assume that neither reduced stigma nor a change in genetics is solely responsible for the increase in mental health diagnoses, then we seem to have created an environment that is conducive to mental health problems in young adults. In particular, the transition from a learning environment to a working environment seems to be a moment of vulnerability for young adults, and this research therefore focuses on a transitional group, mostly aged 20-28, who can identify with this life transition. The aim of this thesis is to address the social phenomenon of declining mental health among the transitional group and to look for novel ways forward.

In order to find ways forward, a probable vision for the future of 2032 is defined through the collection of 168 contextual factors; concise statements that serve as building blocks for the future context. These are collected through semi-structured interviews with the transition group, interviews with experts such as philosophers, psychologists and psychiatrists, books, journals and documentaries. This probable future context is made understandable through a framework that describes six states of mind into which the transition group can be trapped.

By articulating the normative values of the designer, a number of goals and ambitions emerge for each state of mind that help to move closer to a desired future. For each of these goals, ideas were generated and a strategic set of six promising interventions was developed. Due to time constraints, only the 'One on One' concept was selected for further development into a prototype...

Micro mobility services aim to offer people new and more convenient modes of transport, usually across urban areas. In order to achieve this they make use of public space to implement their infrastructure on, for example by allowing people to freely park a vehicle almost anywhere in the city. One can imagine that this has a major impact on how people use and live in public space, as micro mobility services influence the design of a street. Since this industry is growing every year, the society-wide impact it makes grows along. Therefore this project focuses on the role of micro mobility in public space, and the relationship these services and operators have with people.
This is done by making use of the ViP (Vision in Product Design) approach, where the present context is analysed and researched in order to distill trends and developments concerning the future of this context. This context consists of not just the different micro mobility services, but also other stakeholders such as citizens (both the micro mobility users and ‘non-users’), local governments, and of course public space. Eventually, a future world is envisioned for the year 2030. As this project also falls under the Critical Speculative Design-umbrella, this future world can be seen as a form of social critique on the current state of micro mobility, as well as the direction it is heading towards. Based on this critique, a new version of this future is composed that describes what is desirable.
The final design represents the shift from the ‘undesirable’ world to the ‘desirable’ world. It aims to first and foremost communicate a certain moral standpoint to the client Springtime Design, and should not be seen as a problem-solving proposal. This speculative design should rather be seen as a prop to facilitate discussion on the topic of micro mobility in public space, and what is important in its future.
Amby, as the final design is called, is an ownerless ambiguous vehicle that drives around autonomously in the city. As its features are ambiguous in their nature, it does not force people into a predefined system that determines their use behaviour. People can interpret Amby’s features, and assign meaning to the vehicle on their own. This enables them to control their own mobility in public space, as they can use Amby for anything they like. In its core, Amby represents a future of micro mobility that is more human-centered and democratic in the way it organises and designs itself. After all, public space is meant to be shared by everyone. It should not be compromised by corporates and local governments that exploit and capitalise on public space, as a consequence of striving for maximum profit and convenience.

The way we consume when we travel has had a bigger influence on the environment than meets the eye. We see the cups being thrown away, but we do not see the overconsumption, the dodging of responsibility for sustainable production and the food losses. Our quest for convenience has led us to behave in the most environmentally unfriendly way possible.

To contribute to the sustainable development goals of the UN and strive for
a more balanced world, this project created a possible sustainable strategy for consuming on-the-go in 2036. The desired change is constructed using
the ViP-method and Social Practice Theory. In the first part of the report, the current practice is deconstructed and we try to fully understand its impact on the environment. The next chapter uses context factors to make a prediction about the practice of ‘consuming on-the-go’ in 2036. This context is visualised in a future framework. Based on this overview, in combination with the vision of the project, a desired future is presented in the form of a vision statement. By rearranging the social construct of consuming on-the-go out of convenience to one with a motivation of self-care, the practice arguably becomes a more sustainable, and thus desired, one.

An intervention to get from the current practice to a desired one in 2036 could be a product-service system named ‘Tend’. This concept consists of a new system that supports the self-care journey and a digital platform with a product to help actualise your intentions concerning your well-being. The value for the user is added when Tend suggests a consumption that suits your needs at that moment best.

To show how the concept could find its way into reality, a roadmad visualises proposed steps for the service based on the changing context. These parts of implementation are plotted over time and construct a desired final practice
in 2036. Afterwards, an impact analysis compares the old practice to the new one and discusses in what ways Tend leads to less negative impact concerning production and more positive impact concerning health and consumption. This validates the importance of such a transition and shows the value of this projects’ contribution to a more sustainable consumption on-the-go.

By the end of 2019, 79.5 million people were forcibly displaced worldwide and 26 million were refugees. Over the last years migration has become an urgent political issue in Europe and more people are moving and crossing country borders due to wars, poverty and political instability. Migration is currently one of the main driving forces in conflict that increases the tension between communities and countries’ international relations. The refugee crisis has been shaping the political discourse in Europe since the peaceful place refugees were expecting to find when crossing European borders changed to a Eurocentric reality where refugees are seen as a problem affecting the European systems and their stability. This project dives into how the European society thinks and relates to migration and how it affects refugees’ social integration. How will European cities facilitate refugees' social integration in the European cultural identity of 2030? The focus on the integration domain of Social Connection provides the understanding of the relationships between refugees and the host communities in which they are being hosted.
Furthermore, this project aims to understand how the clash between cultures and civilizations will transform the Europe of 2030 and influence the future of migration. The definition of the European context in 10 years from now is supported by the ViP (Vision in Product Design) methodology and its different stages. ViP provides a vision on the context of the future world and a frame of reference for future design interventions. A framework was developed in order to understand how refugees will behave inside this future world. The framework helped to translate the complex domain of migration into a tangible reference by breaking it into nine different directions and types of situations perceived by refugees when arriving in a host country. The direction chosen focuses on the facilitation of the social connections between refugees and host communities in order to break misconceptions and build a more positive and welcoming narrative. This direction removes a non-physical barrier that is preventing refugees to integrate by disrupting current narratives and perceptions and making the transition from refugees to humans where refugees move away from a position where they are perceived as a vulnerable group to a position of strength. A final design intervention was developed as a trigger that instigates critical thinking amongst the host society in order to reformulate misconceptions. A program provided by municipalities was designed with the aim of introducing refugees into the social space of local communities, delivering social connections and increasing community cohesion by encouraging conversations and face-to-face interactions between refugees and host communities at the local markets. The program gives refugees access to capital in order to produce and sell products based on their cultural background. By reverting the way businesses have been done, the concept of profit takes a new shape and morphs into building refugees’ social network inside local communities.

The goal of this project was to create a new and meaningful product, using Vision in Product design, and Positive Design methods, that could give the Dutch network of financial support organizations directions for improving the financial well-being of adolescents in 2025. The project was hosted by Wijzer in Geldzaken and Geldfit, who both concern themselves with supporting individuals in navigating the complex and fragmented landscape of personal finances in the Netherlands, in order to further national financial well-being. Following the Vision in Product design method, research was conducted towards the driving forces that make up the future context, by collecting factors, discovering clusters, and finally structuring a worldview that can be used to reveal future experiences and behaviors of adolescents in the context of financial well-being. The key characteristics of this future context have been identified as being overwhelming, with a high likelihood of experiencing personal vulnerability, as well as developing financial vulnerability. Through adherence to the Positive Design Manifesto, further research into economics, and clarification of the designer’s opinions about the future context, the designer takes a position on a desired future society. This position is presented as an ambition for a society that supports the well-being of adolescents, illustrated by a number of transformational values and principles that outline how a focus on human flourishing instead of economic flourishing can be realized. Moreover, four visions, that flow from the ambition, are presented on how to improve the individual and social financial well-being of adolescents in 2025. An illustration of how these visions can be used to create transformative products is presented, by outlining the development of a conceptual product. The product facilitates resilience to financial shame experienced in social situations, through the integration of principles from scientific theory, and the stimulation of maintaining small amounts of debt. Finally, a brief letter of advice intends to help individuals and organizations interested in this work to understand how to apply it for themselves.

The foundation of this graduation project lies in the future mobility sector, and will be performed in collaboration with Vanmoof Bicycles. Within this thesis the future context of mobility will be considered with respect to the changing societal landscape. The project will be concluded with a concept and prototype for Vanmoof. This physical prototype will be developed in order to gather further insights.

The mental healthcare system in the Netherlands is in dire need of anupdate. With 90,000 people on the waiting list, an urgent shortage instaff, regular occurrence of ‘incorrect’ diagnoses, and a persistentstigma on mental health, this was exactly what was on RedesigningPsychiatry’s mind (Redesigning Psychiatry, 2020). Steering clear of theproblems of today and rather focusing on a desired future, they crafteda vision for mental healthcare in 2030. The purpose of this project is tosupport Redesigning Psychiatry in their efforts to move towards themental healthcare system they envisioned.By gaining understanding of how societies and their functional systemstransition, a theoretic framework depicting societal change will bedeveloped. This newfound knowledge is enriched by studying ways toinfluence transitions. In parallel, a context study will be performed,to understand how change happens in the mental healthcare sector,and how people working in the sector perceive change. The theoreticframework will be used to structure and understand the findings fromthis context study, providing insight into what is influencing the systemin moving towards its desired goal. The aspects influencing change(and transition) are boiled down to four primary themes, that describeenablers next to blockers:> The challenges of addressing system lock-ins;> The inertia of mental healthcare organisations and theirinexperience with innovation;> The balance between intuitive and scientifically funded change;> The effect of growing public interest on the system.Making use of the newly gained understanding of transitions andways to influence them, a strategic repertoire is created to addresseach of the challenges. Furthermore, the most relevant challenge forthis project—the challenge of organisational inertia—is addressedin a more specific strategy. The strategy outlines a way to structureinnovation in mental healthcare organisations as a means to increasethe organisation’s capability to address systemic problems, and thusits readiness for transitions. Redesigning Psychiatry’s role in this is asa facilitator of design processes and knowledge exchange. The resultsof this project have been evaluated with experts, which enabled afurther detailing of the proposed strategies.

The general concept and meaning of mobility have been changing and evolving since the start of mankind. Mobility has become more than getting from point A to B. Mobility is changing from solely being a means to reach a specific goal into being a goal on its own. PwC also realized this. However, at this moment PwC has no vision to do something with this mobility paradigm shift for themselves or their clients. This graduation project focused on the development this mobility vision for PwC and a design based on this vision. This is formulated in the assignment: Design a meaningful product (- service system) that enables, facilitates or improves personal mobility, in the Netherlands, by 2035.

Through conducting research, I created a future context. The future context is composed out of twelve cases in which people are unable to take personal responsibility for their mobility. It prevents them from creating favorable conditions in which they and others are able to create a better self. Together with PwC I decided to focus on the increasing socio-economic inequality case because, positively contributing to that case is most in line with PwC’s own vision. The selected case is about people are not able to take personal responsibly to effectively use their mobility to grow their prosperity or that of others, due to new (global) external factors.

I created a mobility vision for PwC that is focused at delivering a positive contribution to the above-mentioned problem. The goal of the vision is: PwC wants people to responsibly use their short-term mobility to create a better self. Essential is that the success of it depends on the increase and/or improvement in short- and long-term socio-economic prospects for themselves and others too. Moreover, these prospectives should honor the creation of a better world for flora and fauna. PwC can achieve this by: Creating with people’s mobility surplus personal interdependencies, between people’s short- and long-term socio-economic prospects.

Flock has been created to realize this vision. Flock is a mobility system, owned by the Dutch government, which uses road pricing to charge users based on their departure and arrival location of their journey. Users traveling from a geographical area, which is valuable for society, to another area which is less valuable will be charged less than vice versa. Flock calls these geographical ‘mobility epicentres’. This leads to more socio-economic equality which is more uniformly spread in the Netherlands on the long-term. Additionally, Flock offers people the ability to participate in a nation-wide de-centralized mobility network. People participate by investing in it with a privately-owned product that is capable of providing mobility. This is called ‘mobility virtualization’. If done successfully, the user will be granted access to means that are invested by others in the network that provide mobility. This can be in the same or different mobility epicenters. The government is in possession of a desktop application and the user, mostly Dutch citizens, are in possession of a smartphone app to interact with the mobility system.

For the migrants who left the place they were anchored to, the meaning of resettling is much more than the physical transition from one place to another. The journey of migration is also a process of transformation, during which people went through the self-deconstruction and reshape on many levels. For those who went across borders to the Netherlands in their early twenties to study or work, building a new life also means making an adjustment to a new reality where new information, values, cultural norms and social relations flooded in. This process may be filled with excitement and freshness for people who are able to respond positively to the adjustments, while the majority of people have a mixed experience of challenging, overwhelming, stressful or even traumatising situations. In the case of young Chinese migrants in the Netherlands, because of the unique cultural identity brought by history and the Chinese social system, their emotional struggles in the western world are relatively particular and obscure. This graduation project focused on developing a new vision towards migration for client NPC(NextPort Chine) and a design based on this vision. This is formulated in the assignment: Designing a product(or service system) based on research outcomes of the emotional needs of Chinese migrants who are deciding to make or have already made a decision to stay in the Netherlands, by 2025. ViP(Vision in Product Design) method was applied to build a future CHN-NL migration context and define the interaction method in this project. This future context was shaped by two overall determining driving forces and seven sub driving forces. Twelve cases in which people struggle personally or socially during the migration journey were finally revealed. After evaluating if the twelve cases were meaningful, in line with company scope, and potential to be developed into a functional product, two of the cases were finally chosen to be targeted design goal: Goal A: To help people restore their inner balance again after the impact of the migration process when people’s inner reality is confronted which can cause a psychological imbalance.
Goal B: To help people make peace with loneliness. After defining the ways of accomplishing the two design goals, two design solutions were then proposed to realise each of the design goals. Generated from Goal A, a mental care mini-program embedded in WeChat Application was designed to help with emotional struggles among young Chinese migrants to the Netherlands. Both peer support and access to professional mental therapy were provided to reduce the psychological imbalance. Generated from Goal B, a toolkit including deconstruction of the feeling of loneliness and a zine of loneliness objects was designed to help people cope with the emotions and rebuild self-esteem. Apart from evaluating the final outcome, suggestions for further design improvements and recommendations for future implementation were given in the last chapter.

Mobility is becoming a crucial factor to define contemporary social life. It
 has changed the relationship between government and economy, public and private, work and life, shaping a world that promotes unconstrained movements of people, products, consumption and working subjects. The fundamental redefinition of established social, political and economic structures and relations (Ephemera, 2015) resulted in emergent mobile practices, relations and on a language of mobility that strongly influences modernity. In recent studies, researchers are exploring the increasingly deeper connection between specific forms of mobility and distribution of life-chances. Mobility is becoming strictly linked to issues as social inequality, rights and democracy, and therefore intrinsically political (Baerenholdt, 2013). Governments are looking at mobility as a chance for economic growth, social inclusion and development. Making use of the ‘Vision in Product’ explorative approach, this project focuses on providing an innovative framework to be used as a tool to understand and upgrade the future expressions of Social Mobility in the context of Europe 2030. The model proposed aims to help designers, policy makers and public administrations reframe and create solutions for the future, inclusive to the new cultures emerging and defining modernity. The model value is further explained through the service ‘GLEU: the Glocal European Mobility Network’ developed with the use of the model. GLEU proposes a transformation of the format of a long-term civic commitment into a new culture promoting short-term social engagement, channeling the future flow of social mobility. The service promotes the idea that being mobile doesn’t mean leaving social responsibilities behind but will stress out how travelling per se can be a form of contribution to society. It challenges the common preconception that states how what it is good for the individual is bad for the society, and vice-versa. Recognising the mobile citizens as a transnational resource of Europe, a distinct group of people expressing the new culture of social mobility is identified in the Eurovers. The title ‘Eurover’ originates from the words Europe and Rover.
A Rover is defined as a person that wanders, not just in the sense of physical movement but also indicating a department further away from civilisation. Challenging the idea that individuals and society have different goals that can’t be aligned, this project proposes a new form of rovers, wanderers of civilisation able to create and exchange value among themselves and within Europe. Looking at mobility beyond individuals geographical movements only, this project explores the social, symbolic, economical and personal dimensions of mobility. Defining Social Mobility as the intersection between different forms of work, mobility and personal identity.

This project focus on forming a future flying experience for passengers in 2022. The design concept came from the usage of the approach ViP (Vision in Design), by deconstruction of current aircraft environment ,collecting context factors, forming future context. After the future context structure, four types of passengers’ behaviour in aircraft were distilled: “Freestyle working“,”Distant self-care taking”,”Reluctant developing”and “Stand out from the crowds“. Then design ideas and concepts were focused on “Freestyle working“ behaviour, which had a statement(design goal) as “make passengers see aircraft as means to optimise working and relaxing balance“. Four main activities of “Freestyle working”behaviour are also distilled: working, relaxing, connecting with others and learning. By ideation and conceptualisation, as well as iterations of prototyping and testing, the final concept consists of two parts: the seat part and the galley part. These two parts must work together to achieve the effect of the statement. The seat part consists of a re-designed tray table and suggested seat headrest change. The tray table has privacy boards, drawers and other functions to support working and relaxing on the seat. The seat headrest helps passengers in Economy class to sleep better and connect or disconnect with others. Then the galley part is a concept to open the galley and redecorate it into a welcoming atmosphere, where passengers can gather together to serve themselves and socialise with others. The whole concept triggers passengers to see aircraft as a place for actively performing activities, instead of merely a means of transport. At the end of the report, suggestions of improvement of the design as well as implement were given for further steps.

GRANSTUDIO, an automotive and mobility design agency based in Turin, Italy was interested in how it could use collaborative design tools to design new mobility solutions with and for local
stakeholders. The graduation project is based on a case study of Ghent, BE. that was used to study how the implementation of such tools should be designed. To make a recommendation as to how these tools should be implemented in the design process, a comparison is made with a running project of GRANSTUDIO that
is commissioned by the city of Ghent to redevelop the area around one of the cities largest entrance roads.
