Urban theories as analytical tools of urban morphologies

Student report (2026) - A.M. De Bernardo, R.J. Rutte
Kostof states in The City Shaped (1991, p. 52) that “… no city, however arbitrary its form may appear to us, can be said to be “unplanned.”” Combining a theoretical-referential approach with a historical-comparative analysis this research questions what the defining elements of the urban pattern of cities are and how can these conditions be categorized and typified urban analysis theories.
Establishing a conceptual basis, the first chapter studies the elements and defining factors of a city as well as the ways of living and how they influence the urban form; treating morphology as the product of multiple conditions rather than the expression of a single determining factor.
The second chapter traces the development and configuration of six cities: Florence (Italy), Amsterdam (Netherlands), Córdoba (Spain), Tripoli (Libya), Suzhou (South-East China) and Lijiang (South-West China). With these case studies – selected across three distinct influences (European, Arabic and Chinese) on the basis of variability and diversity – the research contextualizes the development and consolidation of each city.
Lastly, the third chapter utilizes three theories of urban spatial design – the Figure-Ground, Linkage and the Place theories – as selective lenses through which the urban identity of each city can shine through; using them not as mere analytical tools to understand the layers and conditions of each city, but as analytical arguments informed by the historical analysis. As such, through comparing and contrasting the selected cases, the research concludes with the use of these analysis tools as graphical reflections of identity-related physical conditions of cities.

Tracing artistic thought in architectural and urban design

Student report (2026) - J.M. Mekers, R.J. Rutte
This thesis investigates how an artistic background influences the way architects conceive, represent, and design space. It asks how artistic modes of thinking developed through practices such as drawing, painting, and sculpture, shape architectural form, spatial composition, and urban imagination. Rather than treating art and architecture as separate disciplines, this study explores their deep structural interconnections. ...

From coffee cultivation on Java to consumption in the Netherlands between 1700 and 1950

Doctoral thesis (2026) - T.M. van den Brink, C.M. Hein, U. Bosma, R.J. Rutte
This thesis examines the 250-year spatial development of the maritime coffee chain connecting Java and the Netherlands between 1700 and 1950. By integrating the Global Commodity Chain framework with the Petroleumscape concept, the study demonstrates how state institutions, private businesses, shipping companies, social associations, and intermediaries together formed a colonial “coffeescape,” consisting of a logistical, governance, and imaginative layer.

Based on extensive archival research and detailed contemporary maps and images, architectural and spatial analyses, the thesis demonstrates how the expansion of coffee cultivation on Java profoundly transformed its landscape. The advancing frontier was initially strongly anchored in forced labour after which it was succeeded by free market forces. However, both systems led to an enormous environmental degradation. The thesis further shows how this process was connected to developments in port cities like Amsterdam and Rotterdam and their hinterland which underwent substantial infrastructural, organisational, and imaginative changes as they processed ever‑increasing volumes of Java coffee.

The spatial perspective applied in this research shows that decision makers shaped the Coffeescape far beyond their own locations, revealing the wider consequences of their choices. Reflecting on sustainability, the thesis argues that understanding past systems of extraction and chain coordination is essential for evaluating the global environmental impacts of future decisions and the role of port cities. This coffeescape’s history demonstrates the enduring consequences of commodity-driven development. The research therefore concludes that sustainable futures require engaging with the perspectives and decisions of organisations shaping these global maritime commodity chain today rather than by abstract models. ...

Student report (2025) - Y.G. Wolffenbuttel, R.J. Rutte
This thesis examines the architecture of Dutch station buildings during the rise of the railways between 1840 and 1875. By analysing four representative stations - the Willemspoort station in Amsterdam (HIJSM, 1843), the Smallepad station in Amersfoort (NCS, 1863), the Rhijnspoorweg station in The Hague (NRS, 1870) and Dordrecht station (MESS, 1872) - insight is gained into how siting, style, building layout and routing came together in the design of this new building type.
The research question here is: how were railway company station buildings created and designed in terms of architecture and function between 1840 and 1875?
The research shows that the station was more than a functional junction during this period. It functioned as a representative structure that reflected the railway company's identity and ambitions. Stations were usually located at the edge of the historic city centre and approached frontally, which reinforced their role as a city gateway.
The companies employed different design strategies: for instance, the HIJSM and NRS opted for monumental neo-classical designs, while NCS and MESS built more functional and sober stations in neo-Renaissance style. The layout, however, showed many similarities, with hierarchical structure, clear zoning and direct access to the platform. The Hague and Dordrecht thereby paid extra attention to passenger flow.

The thesis concludes that during this period, the station building developed into a recognisable and meaningful building type, based on a shared design strategy in which representation, spatial arrangement and user-oriented routing were central. ...

The Evolution of Residential Building Facades in the Netherlands (1920 – Present)

Student report (2025) - J. Wouda, R.J. Rutte
This history paper explores how the facades of Dutch residential buildings have changed from 1920 to today. It looks at how social, economic, political, and architectural developments influenced these changes. The main question is: How and why have Dutch residential facades evolved over the past century, and what role did broader societal developments play in this transformation? The study uses a historical approach to follow key changes; from the decorative brickwork and craftsmanship of the early 20th century, to the simple, functional designs after World War II, and finally to modern facades that focus on sustainability and energy efficiency. Important government policies, such as the Woningwet (1901), Wederopbouwwet (1950), Klimaatakkoord (2019), and Omgevingswet (2024), played a major part in shaping how facades look and function. The research shows that Dutch architecture has continually adapted to changing needs. Economic challenges, housing shortages, and climate concerns have led to more standardised, compact, and eco-friendly designs. Throughout all of this, Dutch residential architecture has shown a strong ability to balance strict building rules with creative and innovative design solutions. ...

The dynamic between public transportation and urban development of The Hague from 1840s to 1940s

Student report (2025) - W. Huang, R.J. Rutte
Until 1840, The Hague was a relatively small city. However, by 1920 its population had grown to 350,000—five times larger than in 1840—marking its transformation into a modern city. This significant growth coincided with major transportation developments, the construction of two main train stations in 1843 and 1871, and the inauguration of the first horse-drawn tram line in 1864. This thesis investigates whether and how these transportation advancements influenced the rapid expansion of the city.
A mapping analysis was conducted to trace urban changes from 1843 to 1940, spanning the opening of the Hollands Spoor station to the stagnation brought by World War II. This analysis reveals key developments: the disappearance of canals, the extension of the tram line to Scheveningen, significant northwestward expansion, the emergence of industrial zones around Hollands Spoor, and the spatial limitations created by the railway line. Chapter 5 further explores the relationship between these transformations and the transportation system.
The study shows that trains and trams had differing impacts. The railway acted as a physical barrier, slowing development in areas behind the station, while the tram system facilitated uneven urban growth, particularly toward the northwest. This was largely due to the high cost of public transport, which initially served only the upper class. As a result, affluent areas remained relatively stable, while working-class populations settled near the industrial zones surrounding the stations.
These outcomes reflect multiple historical and geographical factors. The rise of industrial zones was influenced by the Second Industrial Revolution, while the choice to locate stations in peat areas also shaped urban development. While results may differ in other geographic contexts, this thesis stresses the importance of considering multiple factors, economic, social, and environmental, when planning transportation infrastructure. ...

Western Transformations In Kurdistan-Iraq During The 20th Century

Student report (2025) - S. Sharaf, R.J. Rutte
This thesis explores how colonial and post-colonial influences have shaped the urban development and architectural identity of Erbil from 1900 to the present. While the Erbil Citadel has represented the historical core of the city, the 20th and 21st centuries marked a shift toward large-scale spatial expansion and architectural transformation. The research focuses on five key periods: the traditional city, the British Mandate period, the Kingdom of Iraq, the Ba’athist regime and the post-2003 modernization era. Each period brought different external powers, policies and planning ideologies that left a lasting impact on Erbils built environment.
Through historical mapping, spatial analysis on the case study of Erbil, the thesis identifies patterns in the way urban form and architecture evolved over time. The study highlights a relationship between urban expansion and architectural change, showing how new planning models allowed the introduction of different building styles and materials. It also examines how local architectural traditions fade away in response to these changes.
By outlining the shifts in both city planning and building culture, this research offers an understanding of how external forces and local adaptation have shaped the current identity of Erbil. This way the thesis provides insights into the complex relationship between politics, planning and architecture in Erbil. ...

In English:
This thesis examines the influence of Philips on the urbanization of Eindhoven between 1891 and 1972. From historical, spatial, and social perspectives, it analyzes how the growth of this technology company structurally transformed the city. Philips played a key role in the transformation of Eindhoven from an agrarian market town into an industrial and technological center. The company’s expansion led to large-scale housing projects such as Philipsdorp and Drents Dorp, influenced infrastructure development, and stimulated suburbanization. Philips functioned as an “invisible city government,” actively shaping municipal policies—especially during the post-war reconstruction period. Through cartographic analysis and archival research, the spatial expansion of the city is mapped and visualized. This thesis demonstrates how private companies can exert profound influence on urban development, with Philips shaping not only the physical environment, but also the social and administrative structures of the city. During this period, Eindhoven was quite literally built to meet the needs of the company.

Milton Keynes and Almere. Parallels in 20th Century Policy and Planning

Student report (2025) - James Burkhalter, R.J. Rutte
Initial research into comparative academic discourse about the UK and The Netherlands’ post-WWII New Towns Programme (NTP), and specifically its culmination in the last of the New Towns, was found to be very limited. In isolation, Milton Keynes and Almere are often exaggerated and considered part of a unique chronology by scholars typically from these respective countries.

In response, The Last of the New Towns study was carried out as part of the AR2A011 Architecture History Thesis module of the TU Delft MSc Architecture course. It is hoped that the following publication is the start of a greater corpus of work on New Town planning by the author. Born in Hertfordshire, the neighbouring county to Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), and now an international student at TU Delft, the module provided a special opportunity to understand and learn about New Towns in the context of both British and Dutch policy and planning.
Surprised by the many similarities between the two — starting from the Green Belt and the Groene Hart (Green Heart) and concluding with the polynuclear planning of Milton Keynes and Almere — this study positions the intersection of planning doctrine against each other from National to New Town scale. ...

In schematic maps with different themes: the reclamation and parcellation of land, land use through agriculture and urbanization, and infrastructure

Student report (2024) - J.G. Boendermaker, R.J. Rutte
The Haarlemmermeer is a municipality in the west of the Netherlands that has formed completely through the reclamation of the former lake of the same name. In its extensive history, we can suppose that the Haarlemmermeer has not had a linear development, in the sense that through time, it has faced many setbacks that impeded different kinds of progress to take place. Firstly, we see this in the efforts to reclaim the lake, which took over two centuries and many plans to achieve. Secondly, we see this through the harsh conditions that were present after the reclamation, where urbanization started of slowly and agriculture was made difficult. Lastly, we see it in infrastructure, where shipping, railways and the airport have all faced hurdles in attempts to grow. This paper uses a series of schematic maps to examine and understand the non-linear development of the Haarlemmermeer since the first reclamation plans of the 1600s, till the present. ...
