The Resilient Coastal Landscapes graduation lab investigates how a landscape-based regional design approach can enhance the resilience of coastal areas worldwide. This approach emphasizes the dynamic relationship between natural and urban systems across spatial and temporal scales. By using the landscape as a foundation for sustainable urban development, it leverages research through design to explore the potential of landscape architecture in creating water-sensitive environments, implementing nature-based solutions, preserving cultural heritage, and fostering socially inclusive, ecological development. Inherently transdisciplinary, this landscape-driven methodology uses the power of design to navigate today’s complex challenges—bridging long-term visions with actionable, short-term interventions. The projects showcased here illustrate the broad potential of this approach: from conserving natural systems and mitigating flood risks to guiding sustainable urban transformation and cultivating a deeper harmony between nature and culture.

This open access book provides a cross-sectoral, integrative and multi-scale design and planning approach for adaptive urban transformation of fast urbanising deltas, taking the Pearl River Delta (China) as a case study. Deltaic areas are among the most promising regions in the world. Their strategic location and superior quality of their soils are core factors supporting both human development and the rise of these regions as global economic hubs. At the same time, however, deltas are extremely vulnerable to multiple threats from both climate change and urbanisation. These include an increased flood risk combined with the resulting loss of ecological and social-cultural values. To ensure a more sustainable future for these areas, spatial strategies are needed to strengthen resilience, i.e. help the systems to cope with their vulnerabilities as well as enhance their capacity to overcome natural and artificial threats.

The book provides a unique approach that integrates research in urban landscape systems, territorial governance and visualisation techniques that will help to achieve more integrated and resilient deltas. Based on an assessment of the dynamics of change regarding the transformational cycles of natural and urban landscape elements, eco-dynamic regional design strategies are explored to reveal greater opportunities for the exploitation of natural and social-cultural factors within the processes of urban development.

Deze publicatie is een weerslag van de uitkomsten van het KaDEr-project (Karakteristiek Duurzaam Erfgoed) dat de TU Delft in opdracht van en in samenwerking met de Provincie Gelderland heeft uitgevoerd. De lezer wordt meegenomen in de zoektocht om invulling te geven aan de relatie wetenschap, praktijk en beleid rondom duurzaam erfgoed op verschillende schaalniveaus. Aan de hand van acht bijdragen wordt gereflecteerd op het proces en de uitkomsten. De auteurs gaan in op een thema dat gedurende de afgelopen vier jaar aan de orde is geweest. Ook nemen zij stelling in met betrekking tot het debat dat naar aanleiding van dit thema gevoerd is en in veel gevallen nog verder gevoerd kan worden. Daarnaast hebben we een aantal meer zijdelings betrokkenen gevraagd om stelling te nemen met een uitspraak naar aanleiding van hun ervaringen tijdens het project.

Het KaDEr-project omvatte na een intensieve voorbereiding vier kalenderjaren. We denken dat op het onderdelen nog een vervolg behoeft. KaDEr staat dus voor Karakteristiek Duurzaam Erfgoed en in het project is gewerkt aan energetische duurzaamheid, financieel gezond perspectief, functioneel gebruik en het borgen kennis op lange termijn. Het project zelf werd opgebouwd rond vier Living Labs om theorie en praktijk aan elkaar te koppelen:
 Living Lab XL-Stad: Zutphen, Winterswijk en Elburg. Daarbij droegen we vanuit KaDEr bij aan een onderzoek naar Kerkenvisies en de Energietransitie voor diverse gemeenten;
 Living Lab L-Stad: Landgoederen, waar het Baaksebeek-gebied en Gelders Arcadië centraal stonden en het onderzoek resulteerde in de betreffende Ontwerpatlas;
 Living Lab M-Typologie: Kerken. Nationaal en regionaal een opgave die veel aandacht kreeg de afgelopen vier jaar. Specifiek keken wij vanuit KaDEr naar het functioneren van Energiescans en de Financiële Duurzaamheid aan de hand van de Eusebiuskerk in Arnhem en de Stevenskerk in Nijmegen;
 Living Lab S-Gebouw: Reuversweerd. Een (bouw)locatie die we vier jaar lang intensief hebben gevolgd en waar alle partijen veel van hebben geleerd. We hebben daarnaast onderzoek gedaan naar Afwegingsmodellen voor het verduurzamen van monumenten en de Gevolgen van het na-isoleren van monumenten met binnenisolatie.

Er werden binnen de Living Labs en deelonderzoeken diverse overkoepelende thema’s aan de orde gesteld en beproefd en daar is lering uitgetrokken. Dit heeft zich ook vertaald in het gaandeweg aanpassen van de aanpak en in de voorbereiding van nieuw beleid. Het geeft ook aanleiding om op lange termijn zaken anders te gaan doen. Wat er is geleerd en waar bijgestuurd kan worden is in acht hoofdstukken samengevat. We reflecteren op het proces van het KaDEr-project. We geven adviezen voor het bijsturen van beleid. Een visie op de toekomst, vanuit de provincie zelf, komt vervolgens aan de orde. Tijdens de vier jaren van uitvoering van het project is er op diverse schaalgebieden geacteerd.

Op het grote schaalgebied is met het Living Lab L-Gebied (Landgoederen), een koppeling met het Europese Innocastle project gemaakt. Daar hebben ook ontwerpprojecten met studenten plaatsgevonden en er is een Ontwerpatlas samengesteld.

Het leren van elkaar stond van het begin af aan bij het KaDEr-project centraal Samen met het Gelders Restauratie Centrum en de Monumentenwacht Gelderland zijn er onderwerpen via kennisoverdracht en workshops uitgewerkt. Via de koppeling van onderwijs aan bijvoorbeeld de stad werd in het Living Lab XL-Stad tussen studenten, gemeenteambtenaren en gebouweigenaren samengewerkt om van elkaar te leren.

Bijzonder is het kerkelijk erfgoed en de wijze waarop de Kerkenvisie als instrument een rol zal spelen bij de herontwikkeling van kerken. Dit is in de praktijk samen met drie gemeenten uit de Oost-Achterhoek uitgewerkt. In het KaDEr project komen zo theorie en praktijk mooi samen. Concreet kunnen en zullen beslissingen op het schaalgebied van gebouw en materiaalgebruik belangrijke gevolgen hebben voor opdrachtverlening, uitvoering, instandhouding en subsidieverstrekking aan erfgoed.

Door alle schalen heen richtten we steeds de blik op de toekomst. Daarbij kunnen we aan de energietransitie, die steeds urgenter wordt, niet voorbijgaan. Daar ligt zeker voor historische binnensteden een uitdaging. In twee gemeenten is hiervoor een inspirerende driedaagse ‘roadshow’ gehouden en is een energietransitie roadmap uitgewerkt.

Het KaDEr-project heeft geleid tot een veelheid aan leerzame ervaringen die nu in de nabije de toekomst kunnen inspireren en hun weerslag krijgen in provinciaal beleid dat een duurzame instandhouding van monumentaal erfgoed binnen de provincie Gelderland een stap verder brengt. Duurzame instandhouding biedt een visie op de lange termijn en is de basis voor een maatschappelijk verantwoorde werkwijze.

Het KaDEr-project kon alleen tot stand komen door een goede samenwerking tussen en vele krachtsinspanningen van vele partijen en personen. Namens de TU Delft bedankt de redactie van de publicatie KaDEr-stellingen alle betrokken personen bij de provincie Gelderland, de gemeenteambtenaren in Zutphen, Elburg, Winterswijk, Aalten en Oost-Gelre, de partners van de Gelderse Erfgoed Alliantie, de monumenteneigenaren en hun architecten, adviseurs en projectleiders op locatie en met name die op Reuversweerd. Daarnaast was het succes van KaDEr niet mogelijk geweest zonder de inzet van docenten, onderzoekers vanuit drie afdelingen van de faculteit Bouwkunde van de TU Delft en de vele studenten die vier jaar lang aan het project hebben gewerkt en het tot een inspirerend en leerzaam geheel hebben gemaakt.

This publication offers an overview of the latest cross-disciplinary developments in the field of Building with Nature (BwN) for the protection of coastal regions. The key philosophy of BwN is the employment of natural processes to serve societal goals, such as flood safety. The starting point is a systems-based approach, making interventions that employ the shaping forces of the natural system to perform measures by self-regulation. Initial pilots of this innovative approach originate from coastal engineering, with the Sand Motor along the coast of South Holland as one of the prime examples. From here, the BwN approach has evolved into a new generation of nature-based hydraulic solutions, such as mangrove forests, coastal reefs, and green dikes.

Responding to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal No. 11 to ‘make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable’, Inclusive Urbanism reveals a wide variety of approaches to promoting social inclusion. Questions of architecture and urbanism are considered alongside those of landscape design, urban geography and city planning.

As the title suggests, the content is divided into three parts: research, education and practice. A conceptual framework is offered in the opening part along with a theoretical embedding of the term ‘inclusiveness’. Here the discussion also encompasses the latest results of urban planning research. In the second part, the focus turns to university teaching. Do we need new teaching formats, and if so, how can these be designed to ease students into the topic of ‘inclusive urbanism’? The third part of the book offers diverse examples of spatial design, urban laboratories, planning and co-production processes, all presented with their respective possibilities for boosting inclusion. Consciously international in outlook, the book identifies practices in both the Global North and Global South.

Inclusive Urbanism brings together selected contributions presented at an international conference on ‘Urban Studies’ held at the TU Dresden in November 2018. The conference was jointly organized by the TU Dresden, the TU Delft, the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development in Dresden, the Czech Technical University of Prague and the Wroclaw University of Science and Technology.

Report of the MSc Landscape Architecture 2019 - 2020, Graduation Lab Resilient Heritage Landscapes. In this graduation lab landscape architecture students from TU Delft explored the landscape assets of private and dispersed heritage properties and developed design strategies to engage them in future-proof landscape development. The focus of the lab is on the landscape system of castles and historic country estates in Gelderland, a region in the East of the Netherlands, also known as the ‘Garden of Gelderland’. Strategically chosen learning cases are elaborated via research-through-design to explore landscape architecture principles for context-sensitive water management, landscape coherence, ecological development and recreation at multiple scales, as well as their spatial implications.

This publication presents the results of a design lab that explores landscape-based design approaches for adaptive urban transformation in fast urbanizing deltas. While using design as a research strategy landscape architecture principles are explored that ensure water safety and inclusive socio-ecological design. The projects as presented here explore water resilient industrial transformation, flood protection, socio-spatial integration and the reintegration of urban villages in the Pearl River Delta. There are also two sheer projects with similar approach applied in Beijing and Jakarta. This lab is connected to the NWO-NSFC-EPSRC funded project ‘Adaptive Urban Transformation’ and a collaboration of Delft University of Technology, South China University of Technology and The University of Sheffield. The coastal landscape of South Florida faces many challenges connected to climate change and urbanization. Sea level rise, loss of ecosystems, land subsidence, aquifer depletion are some of the issues that need serious attention. Landscape Approach Florida is showcasing results of a Landscape Architecture Design Lab where seven MSc-graduates explored the possibilities of landscape-based approaches to address the challenges from an integral and multi-scale spatial design perspective. Students employed landscape-based systemic strategies and design interventions that facilitate the ecological restoration of wetlands, provide flood protection, and increase urban resilience through green-blue infrastructures.

Nederlandse landschapsarchitecten zijn voorlopers bij het vinden van oplossingen voor ‘global issues’ als klimaatverandering, voedselvoorziening, de leefbaarheid van steden en de energietransitie. Ontwerpend onderzoek heeft zich hierbij bewezen als hét middel om vat te krijgen op opgaven en perspectieven te ontwikkelen voor een wereld waarin de complexiteit alleen maar toeneemt. Maar wat is ‘ontwerpend onderzoek’ eigenlijk precies? Hoe wordt er in de dagelijks praktijk mee omgegaan? En kan ontwerpen worden ingezet voor kennisverwerving, en hoe dan? In deze publicatie reflecteren onderwijsinstellingen, bureaus en opdrachtgevers vanuit hun eigen perspectief op vragen zoals deze en gaan ze op zoek naar een gemeenschappelijke basis om verder te gaan met als doel het onderzoeksdomein, en daarmee de fundamenten van het vak, verder te ontwikkelen.

Het landschap draagt sterk bij aan leefkwaliteit en is daarmee een absolute voorwaarde van een succesvolle kenniseconomie. Deze draait immers om menselijk kapitaal en vooral talent is erg kieskeurig over waar het zich vestigt. In kennisintensieve sectoren geldt nu al: jobs follow talent, en bovendien zijn werknemers die bewegen en groen in de nabijheid hebben productiever en minder vaak ziek. De nieuwe economie draait om ontmoetingen, nabijheid en circulariteit. Dit betekent iets voor de inrichting van onze openbare ruimte, woon- en werkmilieus en open landschappen in de invloedsfeer van de stad. Wereldwijd, ook in Nederland, is de trend dat de economische en fysieke groei zich afspeelt in metropolitane gebieden. (Historisch) landschap speelt ook een belangrijke rol in de regionale identiteit. Nederland is een koploper als het gaat om leefkwaliteit. Het is dus in ons voordeel dat we die kwaliteit als een steeds relevanter vestigingsfactor kunnen inzetten in de mondiale concurrentiestrijd. Tegelijkertijd toont het de urgentie om die kwaliteit in de aanstaande duurzaamheidstransities en verstedelijkingsopgave niet te verkwanselen, maar juist te versterken. Adriaan Geuze: ‘waarom zouden we niet de ambitie hebben om van een regio zowel een science park als een national park te maken?’ Dit magazine en de bijhorende tentoonstelling zoeken naar manieren om het Nederlandse landschap in te zetten voor het vestigingsklimaat.

Geodesign is a GIS-based planning and design method, which tightly couples the creation of design proposals with impact simulations informed by geographic contexts. Geodesign as such comprises a set of geo-information technology driven methods and techniques for planning built and natural environments in an integrated process. It includes project conceptualization, analysis, design specification, stakeholder participation and collaboration. This academic publication brings together a wide variety of contributions from authors with backgrounds in urban planning, landscape architecture, education and geoinformation technology presenting the latest insights and applications of geodesign. Through focusing on interdisciplinary design-related concepts and applications of GIS international experts share their recent findings and provide clues for the further development of geodesign. The book originated at the Geodesign Summit Europe (2014) held at TU Delft’s Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment preparing grounds for in depth discussions and future collaborations. This is important since there is still much work to do. Not only in the development of geo-information technology, but especially in bridging the gap with the design-disciplines.

Social, cultural and technological developments of our society are demanding a fundamental review of the planning and design of its landscapes and infrastructures, in particular in relation to environmental issues and sustainability. Transportation, green and water infrastructures are important agents that facilitate processes that shape the built environment and its contemporary landscapes. With movement and flows at the core, these landscape infrastructures facilitate aesthetic, functional, social and ecological relationships between natural and human systems, here interpreted as Flowscapes. Flowscapes explores infrastructure as a type of landscape and landscape as a type of infrastructure. The hybridisation of the two concepts seeks to redefine infrastructure beyond its strictly utilitarian definition, while allowing spatial design to gain operative force in territorial transformation processes. This academic publication aims to provide multiple perspectives on the subject from design-related disciplines such as architecture, urban planning and design, landscape architecture and civil engineering. It is a reflection of a multidisciplinary colloquium on landscape infrastructures held at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, Delft University of Technology, preparing grounds for in-depth discussions and future collaborations. The authors explore concepts, methods and techniques for design-related research of landscape infrastructures. Their main objective is to engage environmental and societal issues by means of integrative and design-oriented approaches. Through focusing on multidisciplinary design-related research of landscape infrastructures they provide important clues for the development of spatial armatures that can guide urban and rural development and have cultural and civic significance.
